The  of the 探花精选 hosted the 1st Philippines Writing Project last October 2016, with two invited guests and facilitators from the University of Texas 鈥 San Antonio (UTSA).

San Antonio Writing Project Director Dr. Roxanne Henkin, together with Philippines Writing Project 2016 Workshop Co-Director Mr. Angelo Caverte, an alumnus of the UST  Batch 2011, served as speakers and facilitators for the workshop-training held from October 17 to 21, 2016 for Batch 1 and October 22, 24 to 27, 2016 for Batch 2 held at the Arts and Letters Learning Resource Unit Room. The airfare of Henkin and Caverte was supported by the San Antonio Spurs Foundation, who selected the Philippines Writing Project from among other proposals.

The workshop engaged the selected faculty participants in daily journals, morning logs, and writing lessons. Participants were made to face writing fears, debunk writing myths, and eventually rediscover their writing skills by focusing on personal and informal writing that could have been sidelined due to other school-related tasks. At the end of the training workshop, the participants were recognized as Teacher Consultants who would help improve student writing across all levels and content levels. It was expected that teacher consultants should also be able to organize similar workshops and involve other teacher participants across disciplines and various grade levels.

Writing is essential to communication, learning, and citizenship. This philosophy of writing is what the National Writing Project (NWP) believes in. Its vision is about writing in its many forms as the signature means of communication in the 21st century. It envisions a future where every person is an accomplished writer, engaged learner, and active participant in a digital, interconnected world.

The UTSA is recognized as the largest research university in the San Antonio metropolitan region, offering a wide array of academic studies in the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs. It is also known for its San Antonio Writing Project that promotes the improvement of the teaching of writing and improving learning through the teachers who share their expertise with other teachers in the community.

Dr. Sujana S. Chandrasekhar, former President of the American Academy of Otolaryngology 鈥 Head and Neck Surgery, discussed the 鈥漋estibular Assessment for Complex Dizziness鈥 during the 314th Luis Guerrero Memorial Lecture held on October 26, 2016 at the CME Auditorium, San Martin de Porres Bldg.

The lecture was jointly hosted by the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery鈥檚 Department of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT), headed by Dr. Benito Uy, and the UST Hospital鈥檚 Department of Otorhinolaryngology 鈥 Head and Neck Surgery, headed by Dr. Ferdinand Pamintuan.

Dizziness, vertigo, and balance dysfunction may originate in the vestibular system or elsewhere, according to the lecture. The speaker elucidated clinical pathways to narrow down diagnostic possibilities between central and peripheral causes. Referral for further assessment and possibly treatment can then be made to an ENT subspecialist, like Chandrasekhar.

Chandrasekhar is an otologist/neurotologist and is a board-certified otolaryngologist who provides medical and surgical care of patients, both adult and pediatric, with diseases that affect the ears, balance system, temporal bone, skull base, and related structures of the head and neck. The eminent lady doctor previously served as chair of the AAO-HNS Board of Governors. Currently, Chandrasekhar is director of Neurotology at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in, Bronx, New York; director of the Comprehensive Balance Center, New York Head and Neck Institute of Northwell Health System at Lenox Hill Hospital/MEETH; and Clinical Professor in Otolaryngology at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine and Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Dr. Luis Guerrero, the man after whom the award is named, obtained his medical degree from UST in 1901. He served concurrently as UP professor and chair of its Department of Pediatrics and chief of UST Department of Medicine from 1927 to 1946. He was dean of the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery from 1945 to 1949. He was Fellow of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine, London; editor-in-chief of the Santo Tomas Journal of Medicine; president of the Manila Medical Society and president of the Philippine Islands Medical Association.

Guerrero is known to be a leader of scientific thought, famed clinician and moral practitioner, and he insisted on accuracy of diagnosis and simplicity of treatment, especially in drugs administered to the patient. He belonged to that rare breed of men in the last century who combined sound scholarship, broad culture, high professional ideals and unselfish patriotism.

The Department of Pharmacology of the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery mounted its 10th biennial postgraduate course on October 21, 2016 at the CME Auditorium. The course centered on Drug Delivery Systems, and it drew 250 attendees, composed of physicians, pharmacists, and medical educators.

Pharmacology Department Chair Leoncia Olonan, M.D., and Course Chair Dennis Flores, M.D., explained that these systems refer to bioengineered modalities designed for targeted delivery and/or well-regulated release of medications. Therapeutic agents are applied to patients through various forms and routes, and each of these may have advantages and disadvantages in particular cases. Drug delivery systems may either direct the rate or the location at which a drug is made available or do both.

The course was called FAST due to its format where speakers discussed Formulations, Approaches, Systems and Technologies.

Course co-chair Minerva P. Calimag, M.D., presented PK-PD modeling and drug delivery pumps while Flores helped attendees understand drug formulations. Medical doctors Jean Uy-Ho, described the drug delivery systems for diabetes treatment; Wilson Tan De Guzman, talked about the so-called drug eluting stents used in cardiovascular interventions; Ronald Panaligan, explained glycopyrronium and indacaterol for patients with chronic obstructive lung disease; and Estrelita Judan, spoke on fixed-dose combinations in acid related disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. Finally, Dr. Flordeluna Zapata-Mesina discussed immunotherapy for cancer.

During the luncheon symposia, Dr. Corazon Ngelangel expounded on biosimilars, while Flores spoke on multivitamins in intravenous therapy.

UST  Chair Prof. Joyce L. Arriola, PhD presented a paper during the 4th Literary Studies Conference which focused on Children鈥檚 Literature in Southeast Asia, held on October 19 and 20, 2016 at the Universitas Sanata Dharma in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Arriola鈥檚 paper, entitled 鈥淭he Child-Themed Family Drama in Selected 1950s Filipino Komiks-to-Film Adaptations,鈥 examines two extant komiks series from the 1950s and their film adaptations as part of a longer work to theorize on Filipino film adaptation. Furthermore, the sample texts will serve as springboard to examining these as domestic fiction, as family drama, how they reflect bourgeoisie ethos and how they project a sort of national allegory in the 1950s.

The conference was participated in by more than 60 paper presenters. The literatures for children and young adult were interpreted to be contingent to issues related to education such as values, pedagogy, reading skills, literacy and development psychology. Folklore and fairytales from both the West and the East were re-examined according to how they will fare when subjected to feminist, deconstructivist, psychoanalytic and postcolonial criticism. The literatures for children were furthermore discussed alongside issues pertinent to popular culture, ecocriticism, ecofeminism, politics, ideology, identity issues and indigenous knowledge. A number of papers delved on the use of children鈥檚 literature in the social sphere such as the peace process and performance studies; and children鈥檚 literature has been examined to promote multiculturalism and respect for cultural difference.

The Literary Studies Conference is held annually at the Universitas Sanata Dharma, in cooperation with Ateneo de Manila University. This year, there were 11 participants from the Philippines.
