Five UST graduate students flew to the United Kingdom (UK) to commence their doctoral studies in Architecture/Built Environment.

Arch. Armel Andre Bonifacio, Arch. Brian James Chiu, Arch. Joey de Vera, Arch. John John Ong, and Arch. David Yu are the members of the pioneering batch of graduate students who will take up dual PhD in Built Environment/Architecture, a PhD by research program offered by the (USTGS) and the University of Reading in UK (UoR). Established in 1892, UoR is currently ranked in the top 200 universities worldwide (QS World University Rankings 2018).

This PhD by research is delivered via distance education. There are no taught courses enrolled; however, it follows a certain structure that will allow the students to cope with the demands of the programme. Training is provided to the students before the start and while enrolled in the programme. Students can complete the degree in three years strictly observing the following phases: (1) Independent Study (Standard or PhD by distance) and Supervision; (2) Required Training Sessions; (3) Assessment and Monitoring; (4) Learning Needs Analysis; (5) Annual Assessments; (6) Confirmation of Registration; (7) Additional Training and (8) Viva (Final Defense).

Prior to acceptance to the program, the first cohort hurdled a rigorous training-workshop on Reading and Critiquing facilitated by the UST Graduate School (USTGS-CCPED). They also attended a lecture-workshop conducted by a UoR professor, Prof. Lorraine Farelly, on November 11, 2017.

The pioneering batch arrived in London on September 21 and settled in the UoR Students Residence. Their week at UoR was pretty busy for they were inducted by the UoR International Relations Officer at Whiteknights Campus, met with the School of Built Environment Vice Dean and the School of Architecture Dean (London Road Campus and with the UoR Supervisors), inducted to the library, held consultative meetings with their supervisors, inducted to the Graduate School, and attended workshops for new graduate students.

The dual degree program is a Transnational Education (TNE) program jointly funded by the Commission on Higher Education and the British Council under the project Joint Development of Niche Programmes through Philippine-UK Linkages. Ten top higher education institutions in the Philippines have been selected as recipients of project support: Ateneo de Manila University, Bicol University, Central Luzon State University, De La Salle University, Miriam College, Saint Louis University, Silliman University, University of the Philippines, University of San Carlos, and 探花精选.

When the pioneering batch completes the program, the 探花精选 will be dubbed as the hub for the very first doctoral program in Architecture in the Philippines.

To further bolster the internationalization activities and expand the internalization profile of the Faculty of Arts and Letters, five faculty members and 14 students recently participated in collaborative thematic seminars, special lectures, benchmarking activities, academic visits and meetings in Korea University, Catholic University of Korea, and Dongguk University.

On the first day of the visit, the UST group participated in a seminar at Korea University in which Dr. Leighanne Kimberly Yuh delivered a lecture on 鈥淚ssues on the Possible Reunification of the Korean Peninsula.鈥 This was followed by an academic meeting participated in by faculty members together with Korea University officials Assistant Director for International Cooperation Mr. D鈥橝rcy Drachenberg, Regional Manager for Asia and Oceania Exchange and Study Abroad Programs Office of International Affairs Ms. Yunji Kim, and College of Liberal Arts 鈥 Department of Korean History Professor Dr. Leighanne Kimberly Yuh. In the said meeting, discussions centered on possible collaboration between the two universities in the area of collaborative seminars, research, faculty and student exchanges and participation in summer or winter academic programs.

At Dongguk University, which they visited on the second day, an orientation was given to UST students and faculty members by Office of International Relations Assistant Manager Ms. Sejin Kwon, regarding the conduct of their summer program specifically the Intensive Korean Language and Culture course to be given to the visiting UST students. This was followed immediately by the Korean Language and Culture classes.

Also at Dongguk University, the UST group participated in the grand lecture of a Visiting Professor from Seoul National University, Prof. Dr. Bo-hyuk Suh who delivered a lecture on 鈥淒e-nuclearization and Peace on the Korean Peninsula.鈥 The AB faculty conducted a meeting with Ms. Sejin Kwon and both parties emphasized the need to sustain the international collaboration between the two universities, considering that several activities have already been conducted since 2010 between the two parties.

On the third day of the visit, the UST contingent was welcomed to the Catholic University of Korea by Office of International Affairs Director Dr. Peter Seo, and Head of Admission Office Dr. Joon Suk Kim, a professor of the Department of International Studies. This was followed by a Collaborative Thematic Seminar participated in by faculty and students from both the Catholic University of Korea and 探花精选.

Lecturer-discussants included faculty members from the UST Faculty of Arts and Letters: Dr. Lino Baron, who discussed 鈥淪outh Korea: A Major Ally in Promoting Inclusive Economic Growth with the Philippines鈥; Dr. Augusto de Viana, who lectured on the topic 鈥淢ention of Korea in Philippine Textbooks: A Comparison of Textbooks from pre K-12 and K to 12 ERAS鈥; Dr. Milagros Arrevillaga, who shared insights on 鈥淲ork Values and Reflectiveness as Predictors of Academic Performance鈥; and Asst. Prof. Alain Santos, who talked about the 鈥淯rban Forest Park as Eco Space for Liveable City: Arroceros Forest Park, Manila, Philippines.鈥

While in Seoul, the students visited the Korean War Memorial and Museum, watched a Korean Popular Theatre performance, actively participated in the Kimchi Culinary Academy and attended lessons on Korean Pop culture. The group visited the Joint Security Area of the DMZ area in Paju about 55 kilometers from Seoul where the famed Dorasan train station and the infiltration tunnels are located. These areas are just 2 kilometers from Pamunjeon, also known as the Demilitarized Zone, where the actual demarcation line between North and South Korea is located.

After the completion of the Korean Language and Culture program and academic seminars and lectures, the group proceeded to the ancient city of Gyeongju and the cosmopolitan city of Busan, the second largest city in South Korea, for the cultural and historical visits.

At Gyeongju, the group visited the Anapchi lake, the Pulguksa Buddhist temple Shrine, established 528 A.D., Gyeongju National Museum and the ancient temple grotto of Sokkuram, established 751 A.D. The Thomasians had a firsthand cultural and historical knowledge of what the students could only usually learn from books or instructional materials.

Gyeongju is the ancient site of the Silla Dynasty until the Unified Kingdom of Silla (57 B.C.E. 鈥 668 A.D.) It was the seat of Ancient Silla during the Unified Kingdom of Silla (668-935 A.D.), uniting other main Korean Kingdoms of Koguryo (Goguryeo 37 B.C.E.- 668 C.E.), Paekche (Baekje 18 B.C.E. -660 C.E.), Gaya (42 B.C.E. -562 C.E.). These sites were the silent witnesses to Korea鈥檚 long and glorious history.

Three students of the  attended the 2nd Asia Pacific Youth Exchange (APYE) in South Korea from August 8 to 20, 2018. Charisma Aclan, Daniel Ian Dimitui, and Beneah Gineth Gorospe, who are in their fourth year, applied to the said program on their own initiative and were accepted as delegates, giving them the opportunity to be part of the two-week intensive program of APYE.

The Youth Exchange was co-hosted by Urban Youth Academy, Asian Development Bank, and Hanyang University. APYE is an international exchange program for the youth of ASEAN nations which aims to empower the youth to drive the Sustainable Development Goals into action and maximize their potentials to be the change-makers of this world. The youth delegates pondered about fundamental, structural, and sustainable solutions that could be implemented for the near future.

The activities in APYE consisted of the Asian Youth Forum, where the 200 delegates from 25 different countries made the Youth Declaration on the Future of Work. Although the delegates came from different countries, they were able to express their shared visions and missions and made an exceptional youth declaration thus, highlighting the beauty of diversity. The delegates learned to use Arduino, an electronic prototyping platform for building digital and interactive objects and SketchUp, a 3D modeling computer program to help them design their prototypes and have it 3D printed. The program also consisted of local immersion where the delegates had to seek out problems that the local community faced. The end goal of the program is for the delegates to come up with sustainable solutions and to innovate products that will be beneficial to the community. APYE activities have challenged the capabilities of the youth delegates, maximized their potentials, and allowed them to use their voices in order to fulfill their roles as the change-makers of this world.
