Three titles were featured in the 9th UST Authors Series organized by the UST  (UST CCWLS) held on October 2, 2018, at the Auditorium of the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex (TARC).

This latest edition of the UST Authors Series, titled Lumugar Ka!: Ang Lokasyon sa Pagsasalin, Talambuhay at Kritisismo, featured three titles, all published by the UST Publishing House: Finding Teo: Tula/Talambuhay, a biography of Teo Antonio by award-winning writer and UST Department of Literature and Humanities Chair Joselito D. Delos Reyes, Ph.D., Sa mga Pagitan ng Buhay at Iba pang Pagtutulay, a book of poetry translations by UST CCWLS Assistant Director Ralph Semino Gal谩n, and Ang Tagalabas sa Panitikan, a book of poetics and criticism by BA Creative Writing Program Coordinator Chuckberry J. Pascual, Ph.D. Before the open forum, each author was given time to talk briefly about their new books.

The TARC Auditorium was packed with students from the UST Faculty of Arts and Letters and College of Education, and Far Eastern University, as well as guest writers. Also present were UST Secretary-General Rev. Fr. Jes煤s Miranda, Jr., O.P., UST Research Center for Culture, Arts and Humanities Director Prof. Joyce Arriola Ph.D., Executive Secretary to the Rector Prof. Augusto Antonio A. Aguila, Ph.D., and UST Department of English Chair Prof. Camilla Vizconde, Ph.D. UST CCWLS Director and Prof. Emeritus Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo, Ph.D., in her closing remarks, emphasized how the variety of specializations of the UST CCWLS Resident Fellows can serve in
their mentorship of students. Their unique perspective as producers of literature would also provide another dimension to students鈥 encounter with literary texts. UST Publishing House Director Ma. Ailil B. Alvarez provided an engaging critical commentary on each of the three new works as they were introduced to the audience.

The program was coordinated by Mr. Ned Parfan, assisted by Alvarez, while Mr. Jose P. Mojica of the Department of Media Studies hosted the event. The UST Authors鈥 Series is a regular program, which aims to update the university and the literary community on the latest individual productions of the UST CCWLS. For this year, it was co-sponsored by the UST Publishing House, with ample support provided by the UST Department of Literature and the UST Literary Society.  faculty member Asst. Prof. Ricardo S. Balog, former Assistant Dean of the , was recognized for designing and fabricating low-cost medical equipment that medical practitioners can buy locally for lesser cost. For this, he received the Mario Cruel award for Advanced Engineering Technology together with four other recipients of the 2018 Philippine Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology (PHILAAST) awards in a ceremony that took place in September in Quezon City.

Among Balog鈥檚 functionally innovative medical and scientific instruments which answered or solved the technological needs of medical doctors, other professionals and researchers are:

(1) A low-cost surgical instrument, multi-purpose, adjustable and self-retaining retractor used by surgeons in performing surgery in a patient鈥檚 abdominal area, used at the UST Clinical Division and a self-retaining retractor surgical instrument used by surgeons while performing surgery on the patient鈥檚 throat, used by doctors of the UST Medical Missions, Inc. in their medical missions in Sapang Palay and ultimately at the UST Hospital;

(2) A clamp anywhere 鈥渇lexible retractor stand-holder which holds in place a retractor used in surgical operation (e.g. hemorrhoidectomy) at the UST Hospital which enables doctors to perform operation even outside of the operating room without surgical assistance;

(3) An orthopedic device, used to correct misaligned/dislocated bones, that is, to stretch/lengthen/realign patient鈥檚 lower limb bones;

(4) A practical heat block apparatus for the loop-mediated amplification (LAMP)-based detection of shrimp pathogens under the gram, Biotechnology for Shrimp: Utilizing Molecular Technologies to Elucidate Shrimp Immunity and Develop Disease Diagnostics鈥 with Dr. Mary Beth Maningas of the UST Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences. In addition, a heating block stand was created to hold vials that contain the shrimp test specimen of the above-mentioned project; and

(5) A balut vending machine prototype which is a part of 鈥淧roject 5鈥 (Market Research) of the 鈥淚tik Pinas鈥 Program of Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD).

The Mario Cruel award is being given by the family of Mario Cruel to continue his legacy. Cruel, a Filipino Electrical Engineer and entrepreneur, is a staunch supporter of sustainable energy, gender equality and environment protection. Engr. Balog is the first recipient of this award. The other awardees for this year are: Dr. Rosalinda Torres for Gregorio Zara Award for Basic Science Research, Dr. Marissa Paglicawan for Gregorio Zara Award for Applied Science Research, Dr. Rody Sy for the Dr. Paulo Campos Award for Health Research, Dr. Artemio Salazar for the Leads Agri Award for Agricultural Research, and Dr. Elmer Dadios for the David M. Consunji Award for Engineering Research.

Aside from teaching, Balog also served as director of the now defunct Institute of Technological Courses, and supervisor of the Machine Shop Laboratory. It was in those years that he started to be actively involved in the University community service activities by lending his expertise in fabrication, construction and training. He was part of the construction of Onters for the Aeta communities in Sitios Malasa, Mabilog, San Martin and Sta. Rosa in Bamban, Tarlac, the installation of support structures for UST鈥檚 Long Distance Education Program for the Aeta communities, the design and installation of water pump and piping system for the water supply systems in Sitio Buoc, Bamban, Tarlac . He also designed the course which he himself uses as trainor in the annual skills training in Metal Fabrication and Welding in coordination with the University鈥檚 training and education program known as Vocational Skills Training and communities needing Engineering Program (VSTEP) which is given to out-of-school-youths and residents of adopted communities.

Balog graduated from the 探花精选 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, and a Master in Engineering Program major in Mechanical Engineering from the UST Graduate School. He trained in Mechanical Engineering for Production in Japan under the JICA Vocational Instructors鈥 Training Course.

Six students from the went on internship at the Niigata University of Health and Welfare (NUHW) from August 30 to September 30, 2018 as part of their Global Internship Experience (GIE). The interns included: Ms. Anizamara S. Hilario (), Ms. Wingmay Yves S.聽Alegado (), Ms. Ira Gabrielli delos Reyes (), Mr. Justin Rapay (Occupational Therapy), Ms. Erica Marie C. Leonor (), Mr. Seth Isaac C. Damasco (Physical Therapy). They were accompanied by OT faculty member Mr. Ivan Neil B. Gomez.

During their month-long stay at NUHW, the students were exposed to various training, and research and clinical experiences. On their first week, the students participated in NUHW鈥檚 Interprofessional Education (IPE) training along with other students from Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines. At the end of the IPE training, NUHW President Prof. Masaharu Yamamoto, M.D., Ph.D., conferred upon them the title of IPE Masters.

The succeeding weeks provided the UST-CRS interns with research exposures in the fields of kinesiology, neuroscience and elderly exercise groups, among others. They also had the opportunity for clinical observations in various rehabilitation and health-related settings.

The UST-CRS and NUHW partnership which has been on-going for several years now, has produced fruitful collaborations in the fields of research, and both inbound and outbound student and faculty exchange.
