In various paper presentations, Filipino thought was expounded on by Thomasian philosophers who attended the August 1鈥8, 2024 25th World Congress of Philosophy (WCP), which was held at Sapienza University of Rome. Philosophy Beyond Boundaries was the theme of the 25th WCP, which attracted researchers worldwide to discuss it as a global platform for philosophical conversation. Several academics from the 探花精选 (UST) in the Philippines were among the eminent attendees, and contributed to the inclusive and diverse discourse of the Congress.

Complying with the Congress’s pledge to diversity, researchers from UST gave talks and took part in panels that broadened the discussion on Filipino philosophy and its role in international discourse. Professor Jove Jim S. Aguas of the Department of Philosophy, Graduate School, and Center for Theology, Religious Studies, and Ethics was a major contributor to the Congress. In addition to moderating and chairing the PAP Society Session titled “Filipino Philosophy in Dialogue: Expanding the Conversation,” Aguas contributed to the Center for Research in Values and Philosophy (CRVP) Round Table Discussion on National Values by presenting a paper titled “The Ambiguity of the Filipino Sense of Nationalism and Filipino Identity.”

In the Contributed Paper Sessions, Thomasian scholars presented their respective papers:

鈼徛 聽聽聽 Prof. Fleurdeliz R. Altez-Albela, PhD (Department of Philosophy, Graduate School, and Center for Theology, Religious Studies, and Ethics) – “What Is Levinasian in Sustainability?: Sustainability in the Economy of Being Through Levinas鈥 Third”

鈼      Junior Teacher Blaise D. Ringor, PhD (Senior High School and Ecclesiastical Faculties) – “Education, Christian Values, and the Voiding of Reason: John Henry Newman鈥檚 Personalist Education”

鈼      Mr. Christian U. Solis, MA (Senior High School and Graduate School) – “Towards Understanding Fidelity in Marriage and Family: Paul Ricoeur on Man鈥檚 Capacity to Promise”

鈼      Mr. Charles Aldrin A. Delgado (Graduate School) – “Christianity as Discomfort: Kierkegaard鈥檚 Philosophy of Religion”

鈼      Inst. Ivan Efreaim A. Gozum, MA (Institute of Religion and Graduate School) – “Understanding Filipino Close Family Ties Through Gabriel Marcel鈥檚 Mystery of the Family”

Aguas also presented the paper entitled “The Relevance of the Metaphysics and the Notions of Being and Analogy of St. Thomas.”

These talks demonstrated the breadth and depth of philosophical study at UST and the contributions made by Filipino academics to international philosophical debates. Additionally, through one-on-one interactions, the Congress gave Filipino scholars a rare chance to fortify relationships and build mutual trust.

The Congress emphasized Rome’s long-standing position as a crossroads of civilizations, and it began with a ceremony at the ancient Baths of Caracalla. Prof. Luca Maria Scarantino, President of FISP, and Prof. Antonella Polimeni, Rector of Sapienza University, both emphasized the merging of humanistic and scientific cultures in philosophical conversations, reinforcing this subject of interconnection in their introductory statements.

Scholars addressed pressing ethical, social, cultural, political, and spiritual concerns all week long. Topics covered included the ethics of artificial intelligence, with discussions on the implications of AI on human decision-making and the ethical responsibilities of AI developers, and the place of spirituality in secular cultures, with debates on the role of spirituality in a modern, secular society. The Congress featured round table discussions, invited sessions, symposia, contributed paper sessions, endowed lectures, plenary sessions, student sessions, and the FISP General Assembly. The goal of these talks was to question conventional wisdom in philosophy by tackling issues of sustainability, gender and cultural diversity, inequality, and other modern world concerns.

Every five years, the WCP is arranged by the Federation Internationale des Soci茅t茅s de Philosophie (FISP) or the International Federation of Philosophical Societies. The WCP is a major conference that brings together philosophers, educators, students, and philosophy aficionados worldwide for a week-long discussion of a certain issue.

Two academic researchers of the Center for Theology, Religious Studies, and Ethics presented papers on humanism and loving as critical thinking in the 17th International Conference on Persons, held at the Katholische Akademie in Berlin from July 22-26, 2024.

Professor Jove Jim S. Aguas, PhD of the Department of Philosophy discoursed on 鈥淐hristian Humanism and St. Thomas鈥檚 Notion of the Human Person,鈥 where he acknowledged that as science and technology advanced, spiritual dimensions of human life often became ignored. Using Aquinas鈥檚 philosophy, Aguas 鈥渟hows that a humanism centered on Christian belief is still a relevant and more acceptable proposition over modern and secular humanism.鈥 Furthermore, Aguas said that 鈥渇or St. Thomas, man has a spiritual component, and he is ordained towards God. He developed a Christian humanism anchored on theological personalism, a concept that emphasizes the unique relationship between each individual and God and how this relationship shapes our understanding of human dignity and purpose.鈥

Meanwhile, Junior Teacher Blaise D. Ringor, PhD of the Senior High School and concurrent Academic Collaborations Officer of the Ecclesiastical Faculties, presented his paper entitled 鈥淔rom Garden of Eden to Garden of Gethsemane: Dietrich von Hildrebrand鈥檚 Ethics of Incommensurability as a Justification of Loving as Critical Thinking,鈥 where he argued that the interiority of the person is neglected by traditionalist views of ethics. In doing so, he looks at Dietrich von Hildrebrand鈥檚 critique and discourses on the former鈥檚 ethics of incommensurability to address the flaw by integrating the reality of loving into critical thinking. Ringor argued that 鈥淗ildebrand鈥檚 approach provides a robust ethical framework that acknowledges the full complexity of the human person, thereby enriching critical thinking with a deeper understanding of love’s ethical significance.鈥

After a long wait, the COMIUCAP MANILA MMXX will finally be held 16-18 November 2022. Since 2022 is World Congress year, an event held once every four years, we are happy that the event will now be called COMIUCAP WORLD CONGRESS MANILA 2022.

The COMIUCAP World Congress MANILA 2022 will be hosted by the 探花精选, Manila, Philippines on 16-18 November 2022. Because of the uncertainties brought by the pandemic, the Congress will adopt a hybrid/hyflex mode of meeting, where the speakers and attendees may participate according to their preferences either online or at the venue.

The theme of the Congress remains as originally conceived and so we wish to refresh the original rationale for the Call for Papers to new applicants:

It is evident in the history of the Catholic Church how both faith and reason have been instrumental in the conversion of Rome and its eventual triumph in Europe, from which it has spread across the world through both cross and sword. Yet the dawn of the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II) provided the opportunity for ecumenism with Orthodox Churches and Protestantism, but more so it laid down guidelines for possible interfaith and intercultural dialogue with the immense cultural and intellectual heritages of the East particularly the great traditions of Asia. This marked a movement in evangelization from cross and sword to the opportunity of listening to the other culture.

Since the closing of Vatican II in 1965, numerous publications have been focused especially on the theme of dialogue. These include Fides et Ratio, Ad Gentes: Decree on the Mission Activity of the Church, Nostra Aetate: Declaration on the Relation of the Church to non-Christian Religions, Evangelii Nuntiandi: Dialogue in Mission, and Redemptoris Missio: Dialogue and Proclamation, among others.

Coincidentally, the 探花精选 convenes this Congress as part of the 500th year Jubilee of the Christianization of the Philippines. In view of all these, we invite scholars to reflect on the engagement of faith, reason, and dialogue in today鈥檚 world, particularly in the rich opportunity of listening to cultures from the East. The conference is open, but not limited, to the following themes:

饾棛饾棓饾棞饾棫饾棝

鈥 Success of evangelization of the West

鈥 Attempts at evangelizing Asia

Abstracts for contribution that meet the conference aims are welcomed for parallel presentations. We also accept proposals from philosophical and theological associations and other intellectual groups for roundtable discussions. Plenary speakers are solely by invitation.

The official languages of the conference will be French, English, and Spanish. It is however urged that papers not written in English be accompanied by an English abstract to be attached to the final paper.

We are open to non-traditional presentation formats, but we encourage the proponent to clearly specify the intended composition, content, and mode of participation stipulated in the proposal. The proposal is subject to evaluation before it will be allowed for presentation at the event.

The 探花精选 Department of Philosophy launched the Syllabi Gender Gap Project to address the dearth of female philosophers and authors on course syllabi. For its inaugural lecture, Dr. Sara Protasi of the University of Puget Sound in Washington, USA, virtually delivered her lecture titled 鈥淭eaching Ancient Women Philosophers鈥 on October 2, 2021.

The event, which was open to the public, was organized as a contribution in addressing the perceived gender gap in Philosophy. Common in many contexts is the apparent presence of bias in Philosophy that discriminates against women as argued by existing literature and studies. As a response, the Syllabi Gender Gap Project will aim to re-introduce female philosophers in the discussions toward more inclusive Philosophy syllabi.

A 鈥済ender gap鈥 is the disproportionate absence of women in a discipline or workforce, which can lead to an imbalance of rendition of rationalities and epistemologies that affects the climate of philosophical thinking.

This is perpetuated by the kind of knowledge fostered in the (virtual) classroom through the topics included in the syllabus that mostly underrepresents women. The syllabus, which envisions the kind of graduates an institution tries to mold, is instrumental in achieving learning outcomes for specific courses in the discipline and illustrates what discussions may foster in the classroom.

The critical role of the course facilitator is to develop a shared space between voices that have traditionally spoken and those that have traditionally been silenced, and this can be done through having a robust syllabus that represents both the male and the female voices.

Organized with the first-year students of Philosophy, the webinar is a response to the call to pay attention to the syllabus and potentially address its gender gap. The first webinar of a series featured a speaker who discussed pedagogies and strategies in teaching ancient woman philosophers, a period dominated by the male superstars of the Greek world.

The Faculty of Arts and Letters Dean Prof. Marilu R. Madrunio, Ph.D., in her opening remarks, echoed the presence of the dominance of male personalities in the realm of Philosophy, recounting that patriarchy has aggravated the unfortunate conditions of women in society, such as exclusion from social and political life, and deprivation from opportunities, among others.

To support achieving a balance of male and female representation in Philosophy, Madrunio articulated the challenge to increase women presence in Philosophy by 鈥渟peaking about the female philosophers鈥 important contributions and works to Philosophy and society.鈥

Dr. Sara Protasi, in her talk, showed that women also share in the development of Philosophy. Her discussion was anchored on her 2020 paper titled 鈥淭eaching Ancient Women Philosophers: A Case Study,鈥 citing the methodological hurdles and pedagogical challenges she faced in teaching ancient woman philosophers.

Protasi addressed the question 鈥渉ow to best teach ancient women philosophers鈥 and presented various strategies such as concept mapping, independent research, and creation of digital archives to approach the subject matter.

Assoc. Prof. Marella Ada M. Bola帽os, Ph.D., a faculty member from the Department of Philosophy, and Mr. Carlo G. Cadiz, a first year Philosophy student, served as reactors. Both agreed with the importance of women representation in Philosophy. Bola帽os further magnified the contributions of Filipino female philosophers in having a proportional representation of women in Philosophy, while Mr. Cadiz emphasized a point that he picked up from Dr. Protasi鈥檚 paper, which was to rediscover the forgotten women philosophers in the history of Philosophy.

The call is not to dominate the discipline; it is rather a call for proportional representation, for equity that yields to a certain degree of balance of rendition of rationalities, ontologies, and people. Such representation would lead to improving the climate in Philosophy, that men and women would flourish alongside each other.

of the and lectured on the 鈥淩eligiosity of Hermano Pule and the Seeding of a Revolution in the late 19th Century Philippines: A Kierkegaardian Reading of Ileto鈥檚 Pasyon and Revolution鈥 on November 5, 2020 via livestream on Philippine Normal University 鈥 South Luzon Facebook page.

History from Below: Pasyon and Light of Freedom
Matienzo used historian Reynaldo Ileto鈥檚 Pasyon and Revolution as a reference in discussing Hermano Puli鈥檚 revolt. Matienzo highlighted that the Filipino peasant鈥檚 revolutionary acts stemmed from the 1814 publication entitled Pasyon.

鈥淸Pasyon] is an account of passion and death of Jesus Christ known to the peasants especially in Timog Katagalugan. [It was] simply as Pasyong PInapil, being written by an indio priest, Mariano Pinapil,鈥 he said. Pasyon had a tripartite structure that started from Genesis, proceeded by Life and Death of Jesus Christ, and lastly Revelation.

According to Matienzo, neophytes whispered ancient prayers for divine light for their new state of being, which he interpreted as Bolontad na Loob鈥檚 (Out of One鈥檚 Will) potentialities of courage, ruthlessness, and heroism. Therefore, Matienzo concluded that Cofradia de San Jose was conscious on their practice of faith because it involved choice.

Hermano Puli fought against the secularization of Spanish Friars, and he sought for equality especially on the union of men and women. Hermano Puli founded the Cofradia de San Jose as an answer and tried to veer from the Catholic Church.

On November 4, 1841, Hermano Puli was executed in Tayabas, Quezon.

Revolt in defiance
Matienzo said Kierkegaard justified Hermano Puli鈥檚 call to struggle against the Spanish friars鈥 intellectual approach to faith. 鈥淔or [Kierkegaard], the greatest threat towards authentic spirituality is the objectified faith that fosters personalization, hypocrisy, and irresponsibility. A faith of this sort is devoid of personal devotion, self-will, and acceptance of risk,鈥 Matienzo said.

鈥淔aith is manipulated by state as a matter of citizenship, while for Hermano Puli, faith has become an instrumental dogma for the oppressor,鈥 he added. Viewed from the lens of Kierkegaardian philosophy, Matienzo underscored that Hermano Puli was reliving the early Christians鈥 practice of faith, which was suffering in a state of fear and trembling.

鈥滱 Cofradia member therefore, in a Kierkegaardian sense, is 鈥榤eant to separate one鈥檚 self from the crowd and to do what is not easy to do鈥 since being in a crowd is the untruth,鈥 Matienzo said.

Matienzo, also the e-learning specialist at the Graduate School, focuses on the philosophy of Soren Kierkegaard, Existentialism, Ethics of the Environment and the non-human, vis-脿-vis: an implication to Filipino culture, and Education, Religion and Social Issues.
