From May 2-4, 2023, the 探花精选 was the site of the 326th Programme Assessment conducted by the ASEAN University Network – Quality Assurance. The assessment, which was the first onsite assessment of UST since the pandemic, was geared toward the re-certification of the first four programs to receive AUN-QA鈥檚 stamp of approval: BS Accountancy, BS Biology (now with specializations in Environmental Biology, Industrial Biology, and Medical Biology), BS Chemistry, and BS Psychology.

The assessment team was led by AUN-QA Training Expert and Chief Assessor Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tan Kay Chuan (Lead Assessor, BS Psychology). He was joined by Prof. Dr. Rohaida Mohammad Saat (Lead Assessor, BS Accountancy), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ornsiri Cheunsuang (Lead Assessor, BS Biology), Prof. Wan Ahmad Kamil Mahmood, PhD (Lead Assessor, BS Chemistry), Dr. Nguyen Thi Huyen (Assessor, BS Accountancy), Mr. Mean Udam (Assessor, BS Biology), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Supitcha Cheevapruk (Assessor, BS Chemistry), and Asst. Prof. Dr. Luerat Anuratpanich (Assessor, BS Psychology).

In their respective messages, Rector fr. Richard G. Ang, O.P., PhD and Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Cheryl R. Peralta, DrPH reaffirmed the University鈥檚 commitment to improving its provision of quality Catholic education by submitting to external review from international experts. The assessments, UST鈥檚 7th so far, uses the updated version of the AUN-QA programme assessment tool. The visit included interviews with various stakeholders like students, academic staff, support staff, employers, and alumni, among others, and included site visits and document review.

Chief Assessor Tan, in his wrap-up presentation, invited the University officials to consider the VUCA world鈥檚 challenges and changes. He noted, among others, the increasing impact of artificial intelligence on pedagogy, which he said must keep up with latest technological trends. The assessors likewise cited the University鈥檚 various program strengths, including the functional internal quality assurance systems at the program, college, and university levels, and the positive feedback from different stakeholders. The assessors also presented points for improvement in preparation for a post-pandemic world.

The onsite assessment was held in conjunction with the 13th Assessor Training Workshop of AUN-QA, who provided the training to experts from Brunei Darusallam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Academician Professor Emeritus Fortunato B. Sevilla III, PhD, one of the illustrious and decorated scientists of the 探花精选, was conferred the 2022 National Research Council of the Philippines Member Emeritus Award on March 11, 2023 during the NRCP鈥檚 General Assembly at the Philippine International Convention Center. The award was conferred by the NRCP after the nomination by the Division of Chemical Sciences.

According to the citation read out during the conferment ceremonies, 鈥淧rofessor Emeritus Fortunato B. Sevilla III of the 探花精选 is an NRCP Achievement awardee and an Academician of the National Academy of Science and Technology who has been recognized locally and globally for his pioneering contribution in sensors and instrumentation science research in the Philippines. He conducted training workshops on the development of low-cost instrumentation and microscale chemistry in different parts of the country and in Asia and Latin America. Acd. Sevilla is a beacon to his numerous students and colleagues in the academe and in the Chemistry profession. He contributed to the professional growth of several generations of chemists, mentors, and institutional leaders. He serves as Chair of the Technical Committee for Chemistry of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and has been President of the Federation of Asian Chemical Societies (FACS), Kapisanang Kimika ng Pilipinas (KKP), Integrated Chemists of the Philippines (ICP), Organic Chemistry Teachers Association (OCTA), Philippine Federation of Chemistry Societies (PFCS), and Philippine Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology (PhilAAST).鈥

Sevilla is a prime mover of developing low-cost instrumentation and microscale chemistry in the country and has been mentoring chemists and researchers for decades. In the University, he has served as Assistant to the Rector for Research and Development and two-time Dean of the College of Science, where he earned his bachelor鈥檚 degree in chemistry, Summa cum Laude, in 1968. It was in 2015 when he was elevated to the rank of Professor Emeritus, in a solemn ceremony that celebrated his preeminence as a professor, researcher, and mentor.

Two scientific research posters presented by UST researchers won in the poster contest held on the occasion of the 2023 International Chemistry Congress of the Kapisanang Kimika ng Pilipinas, held from February 15-17, 2023 at the 探花精选.

The first award-winning research poster was presented by the team of Prof. Christina Binag, PhD, Asst. Prof. Felicidad Christina Ramirez-Penafiel, PhD, Mr. David Joseph Alzate, MSc (PhD Chemistry student), and BS Chemistry alumnus Leighnard Jien R. Felix. The team worked on the project entitled 鈥淧olypyrrole and Rice Straw Biochar on Pineapple-Cotton Fabric as Supercapacitor Electrodes for Symmetrical Coin Assembly.鈥 The poster dealt with the concern on the growing global demand for energy that is both clean and renewable, which led to the need to develop energy storage devices. The paper found that biochar had a positive effect on the capacitance of PPY-based fabric electrodes and showed promise as an energy material for supercapacitors.

Meanwhile, the second work involved BSc Chemistry students under the guidance of Prof. Bernard John V. Tongol, PhD and Ms. Hannah Grace Geronimo, MSc (Graduate School student). The student researchers were senior students Ms. Maricar Cruz, Ms. Mary Elyssa Ranoa, and recent alumnus Mr. Matthew Villanueva. They worked on the project 鈥淔uel Cell Electrocatalysts for Ethanol Oxidation Reaction (eor) and Oxygen Reduction Reaction (orr) Based on Pyrolyzed Coconut Husk Biomass.鈥 The study used coconut husk biochar as a low-cost alternative to Pt-based cathode catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction and as a carbon-based support for Pd-based anode catalysts for ethanol oxidation reaction and found the catalysts to provide promising results for ORR and EOR with sustainable, low-cost source of carbon-based materials.

The six undergraduate degree programs of the College of Science received fresh five-year accreditations from the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA), whose endorsement led to the certifications issued by the Federation of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippines (FAAP).

The certificates were the result of the accreditation visits done in November 2021 for the six programs, namely, BS Applied Mathematics, major in Actuarial Science, BS Applied Physics, major in Instrumentation, BS Biology (now with specializations in Environmental Biology, Industrial Biology, and Medical Biology), BS Chemistry, BS Microbiology, and BS Psychology.

Actuarial Science, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, and Psychology maintained the Level IV Re-accredited Status. These five programs were the first programs of the University to attain the coveted top status. Meanwhile, the Applied Physics program received the Level II Re-accredited Status.

The re-accredited status is valid until November 2026.
