UST Filipino Dept. academic staff, students present papers on multi-disciplinary themes at 6th ICAPS

Faculty members and students from the Departmento ng Filipino, College of Education, presented papers on language, education, and culture at the 6th International Conference on Asian and Philippines Studies (ICAPS), held from June 1 to 3, 2023 in Silliman University (SU), Dumaguete City.

Current department chair Assoc. Prof. Zendel Rosario M. Taruc, PhD, and former department chair Prof. Roberto D. Ampil, PhD, lead the delegates from the university who attended the onsite and online sessions.

Taruc presented her paper “Ang Pagsasalin bilang Pedagohiya sa Pagtuturo ng Filipino at
Komunikasiyon sa mga Tiyak na Larang” while Ampil shared his analysis “Ina(aruga/abuso): Mga Imahe at Gampanin ng Ina sa mga Piling Pelikula ni Laurice Guillen.”

The papers presented by other faculty members also encompassed multi and interdisciplinary themes, which included Assoc. Prof. Catherine Cocabo-Yao’s “Inang-Guro sa Panahon ng Pandemya: Mga Isyu at Hamon sa mga Ina sa Paggabay sa mga Anak sa kanilang Online Learning”; Assoc. Prof. Josephine Villegas’s “Ang Antas ng Mathematics Anxiety ng mga Mag-aaral ng Junior High School na may Kaugnayan sa Kanilang Akademikong Pagganap sa Matematika”; and Mr. Mark Anthony J. Etcobañez’s “Pagtitipon ng mga Salitang Ginagamit sa Construction Site: Batayan sa Pagbuo ng Glosaryong Asintada.” Etcobañez together with Ms. Charlotte Malinao discussed, “Mga Hamon at Oportunidad sa Pagtuturo ng Pagsasalin sa Kaso ng UST: Mga Mungkahi sa Pagbuo ng E-Kagamitang Pampagtuturo.”

Filipino major students under the Bachelor of Secondary Education program presented in two groups. Ann Karen Alonzo, Princess Angel Galono, and Hannah Quevedo discussed “Ang Penomenolohiya ng Konektibismo sa mga Gurong Nagtuturo ng Filipino sa Bagong Normal.” Meanwhile, Shane C. Mia, Julius I. Pontillas, and Maria Ysabela C. Sicat presented their findings through their paper, “Pagsusuri sa Kalidad ng mga Piling Modyul sa Filipino para sa Ika-8 Baitang ng Departamento ng Edukasiyon Mula sa Rehiyon ng SOCCSKSARGEN.”

Some 250 onsite and 130 online participants attended the conference, organized by the De La Salle University (DLSU) College of Liberal Arts, Silliman University-Philosophy Department, Danum (Dalubhasaan ng mga Umuusbong na Mag-aaral sa Araling Filipino), DLSU Salita (Sentro sa Pagsasalin, Intelektuwalisasyon at Adbokasiya), and the Andrew Gonzalez Philippine Citation Index.

Education champions ‘transformative learning’ on 97th founding anniversary

The College of Education celebrated its 97th Founding Anniversary Week from April 17 to 21 with activities that focused on ‘transformative learning.’

An opening mass at the Santísimo Rosario Parish Church, presided over by College of Education Regent Rev. Fr. Maximo P. Gatela, O.P., kicked off the week-long festivities, bearing the theme “EDUC@97: Empowering Future Professionals and Building Sustainable Communities through Transformative Education.”

The liturgy was followed by a parade and flash zumba session at the Albertus Magnus Building, and the onsite exhibit ‘Organization Day: LINANG: Pagpapatibay ng Ugnayan Sa Educ,’ which featured the vision, mission, programs, projects, advocacies, and other initiatives of various College-based organizations.

Lectures on Teaching and Library Education

Alternative learning activities were conducted during the second day.

The UST Medicine Auditorium was jam-packed with the entire College community who attended the 37th Fr. Antonio Gonzalez, O.P. Memorial Lecture.

The lecture is held every year in honor of Rev. Fr. Antonio Gonzalez, O.P., the first Regent of the College of Education. With the theme “Education as a Transformative Power: Building Communities for a Better Future,” this year’s lecture expounded on the role of education and the different societal institutions in transforming communities.

Rior Santos, Regional Project Manager of the United Nations Office for Project Services, shared his experience as an educator and professional. Rosanna A. Urdaneta, Deputy Director General for Policies and Planning of Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), tackled the pivotal role of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in helping industries and workers stay.

On the other hand, Assoc. Prof. Ninia Inoncillo-Calaca, from the Department of Mathematics and Physics and the UST Research Center for Social Sciences and Education (UST RCSSED), discussed the need for and challenges of transformative education.

The Department of Library and Information Science led the 2nd Candida C. Agcaoili Memorial Lecture in the afternoon.

The annual lecture is held in honor of Prof. Candida C. Agcaoili, Chief Librarian of the Miguel de Benavides Library from 1950 to 1966 and an outstanding alumna of the College.

Anchored on the theme “Library and Information Professionals in the New Normal: Challenges and Competencies,” this year’s online lecture featured Prof. Hao-Ren Ke, a Distinguished Professor and Associate Dean of School of Learning Informatics, Graduate Institute of Library and Information Studies, National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU).

Dr. Hao-Ren Ke discussed how academic libraries will be utilized in a post-COVID-19 world, as well as their experience in NTNU.

During the same period, the Career Fair 2023: Edge-YOU-Action was being held at the Lourdes J. Custodio Multipurpose Room .

College alumni were invited to talk on the opportunities that await after graduation.

On Health and Well-being, Translation Studies

Soundness of health and languages were the goals on April 19 to 20.

Edukalusugan, a campaign on promoting physical and mental health and well-being, was launched on April 19, at the Lourdes J. Custodio Multipurpose Room and 3rd Floor Lobby.

A nutrition caravan and a lecture-discussion about mental health first aid were held during the event.

Meanwhile, the two-day EDUC Sports: Athleticism Towards Camaraderie was conducted at the Quadricentennial Pavilion Practice Gym and Central Seminary Covered Court.

Spectators have turned out for the elimination and championship rounds of the basketball and volleyball events of the competing teams.

The Departamento ng Filipino and the UST Sentro sa Salin at Araling Salin (UST-SSAS) has set the table on translation studies with Saliksikan at Salintasan 2023: Mga Talakayan sa Pananaliksik sa Filipino at Pagsasalin.

Educators presented their research papers on and related to Filipino and translation studies in this whole day event on April 20 at the Lourdes J. Custodio Multipurpose Room.

In his lecture “Pagbuo, Pagsusuri, at Pagsubok ng Bersyong Filipino ng Expanded Prostate Index Composite (EPIC – F),” Dr. Warren Bacorro, from the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery and ̽��ѡ Hospital – Benavides Cancer Institute, related the importance of involving the target readers in his translation. Meanwhile, Dr. Niña Christina Lazaro-Zamora, from PNU Kolehiyo ng Gradwadong Pag-aaral at Panggurong Pananaliksik, delved on “Si Ako at ang Filipino sa NORMAL na Pananaliksik.”

Faculty members from the Departamento ng Filipino, who are also members of SSAS Lupon ng mga Tagasalin, also shared their lectures. John Dale Trogo discussed the roles of the council in his lecture “Paggalugad sa Trabaho ng Tagapangasiwa ng Proyektong Salin (Translation Manager): Ang Pangangasiwa ng Proyektong Salin ng UST-SSAS.” He enumerated the roles of a translator.

Asst. Prof. Elenita Mendoza recounted her translation practice in “TQA sa Pagsasaling Pang-institusyon: Isang Panimulang Repleksiyon sa Karanasan ng UST-SSAS.” Meanwhile, Roland Bautista and Asst. Prof. Catherine Cocabo-Yao discussed “Ang Paglikha at Pagtampok sa Water lily bilang Sosyo-Kultural na materyal at Pambayang Sagisag ng Kulturang Las Piñ��” and “Mga Naratibo ng Danas ng mga Go Negosyo Mentor sa Pagsisilbi sa Bayan,” respectively.

Prof. Roberto D. Ampil, Ph.D., shared his recent work “Aba! Eba, Nasaan Ka? Isang Pag-aaral sa Espasyo ng Kababaihan sa Traslasyon at Prusisyong Plubyal ng Nuestra Sra. de Peñafrancia.”

Academic staff from the Departmento ng Filipino and BSE Filipino majors attended the lecture. Fellows from the Kapisanang Diwa at Panitik (KADIPAN), led by their adviser former Filipino instructor Jasper Lomtong, also participated in the said event. KADIPAN is a campus organization of Filipino majors in Philippine Normal University.

The community enjoyed the rest of the day with ‘PASINAYA: Ang Himig ng Bagong Simula, the College of Education Concert,’ held at the P. Noval Court. This concert, which featured Autotelic, Sean the Archer, and our homegrown talents, was organized for the benefit of the College’s Isang Daan, Isang Daan Project.

Toward Sustainable Communities

The last leg of the anniversary celebration was marked by two alternative learning activities, both conducted online.

The Department of Elementary Education organized the 2nd Nenita D. Caralipio Honorary Lecture, with the theme “Greening the Schools and Empowering the Future Teachers: A Path Towards Sustainable Communities.”

The lecture is held every year in honor of Prof. Nenita D. Caralipio, long-time principal of the UST Elementary School.

In her lecture, Autchariya Krautharot, Assistant to the President for Foreign Affairs of Lampang Rajabhat University, Thailand, talked about the moral and knowledge in creating innovations for internationalization in greening the schools. Meanwhile, Prof. Arlen A. Ancheta, Ph.D., President of Mother Earth Foundation, underscored that green schools influence the behavior of children in valuing the natural environment.

Finally, the Department of Food Technology and Department of Nutrition and Dietetics organized the 4th Helen D. Ocampo Memorial Lecture. The lecture is conducted every year in honor of Prof. Helen D. Ocampo, the longest serving Chair of the Department of Food and Nutrition Science.

Centering on the topic, “Coconut as a Functional Food,” lecturer Prof. Yanti, Ph.D., of the Biotechnology and Research Centre for Indonesian Spices at the Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia, discussed the “Nutraceutical and Cosmeceutical Potency of Coconut Haustorium” while Acad. Prof. Fabian M. Dayrit, Ph.D. of the Ateneo de Manila University Department of Chemistry, explored the “Benefits of Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO).”

College of Education Dean Assoc. Prof. Pilar I. Romero, Ph.D., expressed her deep gratitude to the whole College community for the success of EDUC@97.

In one of her messages, she explained that “in the grip of the worsening climate change, we are reminded of sustainable economic growth, sustainable source of energy, and sustainable education.”

Academic staff from the Filipino Department of the UST College of Education discussed key issues on native languages and culture at national and international conferences in October and November.

Dr. Roberto Ampil, Dr. Wennielyn Fajilan, Asst. Prof. Elenita Mendoza, Ms. Charlotte Malinao, and Asst. Prof. Ma. Lanie Vergara delivered their research paper “Mga Hamon sa Paglikha ng Panitikang Pambata para sa mga Nanganganib na Wika” at the Pambansang Kongreso sa Nanganganib na Wika held from October 24 to 26. The national congress, held at National Museum of Fine Arts in Manila, was organized by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino in conjunction with UNESCO’s International Decade of Indigenous Languages (IDIL) 2022–2032.
Mr. Jamil Carvajal led the students from the Conservatory of Music, which include Donna Baluyut, Michael Fabian, Joshua Angelo Mondares, and Rhojen Sianda in their research presentation “Tinaguang Duyog sa Tribo: Pagsusuri sa Piling Mga Tradisyonal na Musikang Flalok ng B’laan” in the same congress.
The team was joined by Mrs. Jeniffer Sianda, the mother of Rhojen and daughter of a B’laan tribal chieftain, who served as their research participant.
Meanwhile, academic staff Mr. John Dale Trogo presented his paper “Paggalugad sa Trabaho ng Editor: Ang Translation Project Management ng UST-Sentro sa Salin at Araling Salin (SSAS)” at SUMPAY: Ang Unang Kumperensiya sa Wika ng Politeknikong Unibersidad ng Pilipinas (PUP) held from November 17 to 18.
Mr. Mark Anthony Angeles presented his research “Idyomonologo bilang Pamantayang Pagkatuto sa Malikhaing Pagsulat sa Panahon ng Pandemya” at the 6th Bantula International Conference on Culture-Based Education and Research held from October 21 to 23.
The annual international conference, conducted virtually this year, is organized by the Philippine Cultural Education Program, the cultural education arm of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.
Angeles also presented his paper “Yawa vs. Yawa: Isang Etimolohikal na Analisis sa Yawa ng Pisting Yawa, Nagmalitung Yawa, at Ginhawa” at the 1st Philippine Conference on Indigenous Languages held from October 25 to 27.
The international hybrid conference, held at the University of the Philippines Hotel in Quezon City and through Zoom, was organized by Tebtebba Foundation, with Ugnayang Pambansa para sa Katutubong Kaalaman at Talino and 170+ Talaytayan MLE Inc. It was also held in conjunction with IDIL.
Ampil is the former chair of the Departamento ng Filipino. Fajilan is the chief of UST Sentro sa Salin at Araling Salin, where the other academic staff serve as senior representatives. Angeles is a Resident Fellow of the UST Center For Creative Writing and Literary Studies.

Fil Dept gathers language, literature experts for Wikaakuhan 2022

UST Departamento ng Filipino under the College of Education brought together language and literature experts from different universities in its two-day webinar Wikaakuhan 2022: Tomasinong Pagdiriwang ng Buwan ng Wika.

In her opening remarks, Education Dean Assoc. Prof. Pilar I. Romero, Ph.D., centered on this year’s Buwan ng Wika theme “Filipino at mga Katutubong Wika: Kasangkapan sa Pagtuklas at Paglikhâ.”

She encouraged the participants to interrogate the extent of the use of Filipino and our native languages in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields, which get a large funding and support from the government.

Dr. John Iremil Teodoro, Professor at De La Salle University (DLSU), and Asst. Prof. Joselito Delos Reyes, who teaches at the UST Department of Literature, gave talks during the first session on August 27.

In his lecture “Isla-Islang Literatura, Iisang Arkipelago: Ang Halaga ng Pagtuturo ng mga Rehiyonal na Panitikan,” Dr. Teodoro emphasized on having an archipelagic consciousness to teach regional literatures effectively.

Meanwhile, in his lecture “Ang Dapat Mabasa at Iba Pang Pagninilay sa Gahum ng Panitikan Uwu,” Dr. delos Reyes said that we should recognize a big shortcoming of the teaching sector during the pandemic.

He pointed out that teachers will not be able to explain deep and sublime concepts with gusto if they only face a cold monitor or with a rushed module.

Dr. Teodoro was recently appointed as the Director of the DLSU Bienvenido N. Santos Creative Writing Center, while Dr. delos Reyes is a Resident Fellow of the UST Center for Creative Writing and Literary Studies.

During the second day of the webinar, held on September 3, Dr. Romeo Peña, Dean of the College of Arts and Letters of Polytechnic University of Philippines, lectured on “Pagtuklas at Paglikha: Ang Naging Gampanin ng Pananaliksik at Malikhaing Akda sa Filipino sa Panahon ng Pandemya.”

Dr. Peña explained that we often find in creative works the possibilities of how we will respond to social problems.

He also recognized research articles, published in DLSU Malay and UST Hasaan journals, which focused on the Filipino experience during the pandemic.

In her closing remarks, Assoc. Prof. Zendel Taruc, Ph.D., Chairperson of the UST Departamento ng Filipino, said that television programs have long been using Filipino in Math, Science, and Technology, as STEM professionals do in social media today.

Reyes of Filipino earns top prize for ‘Kokoro’ translation

In an announcement posted by the (FIT), Asst. Prof. Alvin Ringgo C. Reyes, MA��bagged the 2022 Timpalak Mario I. Miclat for his Filipino translation of Natsume Soseki’s classic Japanese novel, Kokoro. This project was held in celebration of the World Translation Day on September 30, 2022.

Reyes’s full text translation will be available by 2023. He is a faculty member of the Department of Filipino and was a researcher at Research Center for Social Sciences and Education. He is the immediate past Chair of the Department of Secondary Education of the College of Education.��

This project led by FIT gives importance to Asian Literature and ensures that some of the monumental literary works are translated to Filipino. The best translation will be stamped with the said award that honors the celebrated writer, translator, and educator, the late Mario I. Miclat.��

Kokoro, which translates to “heart”, is a novel published in 1914, which first emerged as serials along with Soseki’s other works. The works explore human grief as told by a newly graduate student who decided to learn more about life and decided to be under the tutelage of an old man whom he referred to as Sensei.

As the pages are turned, the readers are led to discover more about the relationship between the two contrasting characters, as well as the relationship between Sensei, his wife, and their deceased friend whom was referred to as “K”.

1st International Virtual Conference on the Teaching of Filipino as a Second Language – Call for Papers

The deadline for abstract submission to the 1^st International Virtual Conference on the Teaching of Filipino as a Second Language (IVCTFSL 2021) on June 17-19, 2021 is extended until May 15.

IVCTFSL 2021 was organized by The University of Hawai’i at Hilo, United States of America (USA), and the Department of Filipino, College of Education of the ̽��ѡ (UST), to serve as a nexus of discourse on the Teaching of Filipino as a Second Language (TFSL), for Filipino and non-Filipino students.

The roster of respected educators who will give plenary lectures include Dr. Rodney C. Jubilado (University of Hawai’i at Hilo, USA), Dr. Maria Josephine Barrios-Leblanc (University of California, Berkeley, USA), Dr. Nenita Pambid Domingo (University of California, Los Angeles, USA), Prof. Edith R. Borbon (University of San Francisco, USA), Dr. Cristina Martinez-Juan (SOAS University of London, United Kingdom), Dr. Pia C. Arboleda (University of Hawai’i at Manoa, USA). Dr. Christian George C. Francisco (De La Salle University, Dasmariñas), Dr. Wennielyn F. Fajilan (UST), Dr. Shirley N. Dita (De La Salle University, Manila), Dr. Ivie C. Esteban (Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology), and Dr. José Wendell P. Capili (University of the Philippines, Diliman). Hon. Arthur P. Casanova, PhD, Chairman of the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (Commission on the Filipino Language) will deliver the keynote address.

Aside from providing a platform to discuss current trends, issues, and challenges in TFSL, even for non-Filipino students, the international conference also aims to set the agenda for the teaching of Filipino as a second language to serve as bases for policies, researchers, and praxes.

The academic gathering, to be conducted via Zoom, is also expected to build a network of academics, teachers, scholars, linguists, advocates, officials, policymakers, and other stakeholders who will advance the field of TFSL here and abroad.

Casanova of Filipino is new head of KWF

Assoc. Prof. Arthur P. Casanova, PhD of the Department of Filipino is the new Chairman of the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino, the commission’s official Facebook page announced on December 5, 2020.��

Casanova, a recipient of the prestigious Metrobank Outstanding Teacher award, earned his bachelor’s degrees in chemistry and secondary education in Filipino from the Mindanao State University, and his master’s degree in Filipino linguistics from the Philippine Normal University, where he also earned his doctorate degree in Linguistics and Literature.

An accomplished author of over 40 books, Casanova is also a noted educator, linguist, and theater director. He first joined the KWF in early 2020 as full-time commissioner, succeeding National Artist for Literature Virgilio Almario.

Fil Dept celebrates National Teachers’ Month with Webinar on TFSL

In celebration of the National Teachers’ Month observed from September 5 to October 5 each year, the��under the��, in cooperation with the Office of International Relations and Programs, held a Knowledge Exchange Series (KES) webinar entitled “Anong Bago: Ang Pagtuturo ng Filipino Bílang Pangalawang Wika sa Bagong Normal” (What’s New: The Teaching of Filipino as a Second Language) on September 30, 2020. Livestreamed thru the official Facebook Page of the Department, the webinar aimed to update the participants on the latest trends and techniques on the teaching of Filipino as a second language (TFSL) and share some of the best practices in TFSL in light of online learning. Serving as resource persons of the KES were University of Hawaii at Manoa (UH Manoa) Assistant Professor Leticia Cantal-Pagkalinawan, PhD and University of Hawaii at Hilo (UH Hilo) Division of Humanities Chair and Associate Professor Rodney C. Jubilado, PhD.

Pagkalinawan began her lecture by introducing the demographics of Hawaii, a US state that is home to Asian ethnicities, with Filipino Americans comprising the most number, followed by Japanese Americans, Chinese Americans, and Korean Americans. UH Manoa, the institution where she teaches in, is the only HEI in the US offering a full-fledged degree program in Filipino: the BA Filipino Language, Literature and Culture. According to Pagkalinawan, Filipino Americans pursue programs and courses in Filipino language, culture, and literature to learn about their heritage language, discover the culture of their origin, and fully understand their identity. Meanwhile, non-Filipino students pursue the said programs and courses to establish a deeper connection with their Filipino friends and colleagues. Pagkalinawan then discussed some of the approaches she uses in TFSL, such as Project-Based Learning, Task-Based Teaching and Learning, and Flipped Classroom. She also shared the array of learner-centered technologies she employs in TFSL.

In his lecture, Jubilado discussed the value of considering the profile, migration history, family structure, and linguistic repertoire of learners to design effective language programs and courses. He provided benchmarks of TFSL by sharing the Filipino Studies Program and Curriculum of UH Hilo, which is basically culture- and natural resources-based. This was followed by the discussion of the fundamentals of a TFSL classroom, such as its syllabus, learning process, and expected outputs on the lexical, sentential, and discourse levels. Some of his suggested topics on TFSL include daily expressions and greetings, basic communicative acts in Filipino, giving description and instruction, basic Filipino grammar and vocabulary, and introduction to Filipino culture. Meanwhile, some of the strategies that may be used in TFSL are conversations, narrative essay-writing, workshops, and performances. Jubilado also emphasized that TFSL must be useful, significant and community-driven. UH Hilo does this by incorporating elements of global community and citizenship and service learning in TFSL.

In her opening remarks, College of Education Dean Assoc. Prof. Pilar I. Romero, LPT, PhD recognized that we are living in a VUCA world, that is, vulnerable, uncertain, complex and ambiguous, and this VUCA world was exacerbated by the current pandemic. However, she encouraged the participants to be resilient, with a kind of resilience that is rooted from the heart. She further explained that the real “new normal” is our ability to respond to the challenges of forming new insights regarding language, especially on its power to affect not only the thoughts but even the feelings and decisions. She believes that language is a driving force that can change the VUCA world.

The two-hour-and-a-half KES also witnessed the launching of the International Virtual Conference on the Teaching of Filipino as a Second Language to be held on June 17-19, 2021. The event is co-organized by the UST Department of Filipino and the UH Hilo Division of Humanities and is one of the concrete programs borne out of the MOU recently signed by the two institutions.

Reyes, De Castro of Filipino elected to NCCA nat’l committee on language and translation

and were elected into the National Committee on Language and Translation of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, to serve a three-year term from 2020-2022.

Reyes, the Chair of the , will be the Secretary, while de Castro, a Filipino faculty member and researcher of the , is enjoying a second three-year term as Member of the Committee.

UST’s Department of Filipino is home to the Sentro ng Salin at Araling Salin (Center for Translation and Translation Studies) and has been working closely with the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino and National Commission for Culture and the Arts in developing the capabilities of translation scholars.
