Engr. John Paul 鈥淛P鈥 Pe, BS Civil Engineering Alumnus Class 1987 and former President of the 探花精选 Engineering Alumni Association, Inc. (USTEAAI), gave the first tranche of his gift to the University to fit-out the chapel at the UST-Dr. Tony Tan Caktiong Innovation Center (UST-TTCIC) in UST Santa Rosa on June 21, 2024.聽 The gift was received by Prof. Philipina A. Marcelo, PhD, the Assistant to the Rector for UST Santa Rosa, on behalf of the UST Research & Endowment Foundation, Inc. (REFI).聽

The 65-square-meter chapel with sacristy and vestibule is located at the ground floor of the UST-TTCIC. It can accommodate up to 50 persons at a time. It will cater not only to the occupants of the building and the campus but also to the communities around UST Santa Rosa. The project includes an altar wall of natural marble stone and travertine stone as well as customized set of pews, designed with the Thomasian stamp.

Engr. Pe (CE Class of 1987) is the owner of Archipelago Builders Corporation, a category AAA construction company. He served as President of the USTEAAI in 2018-2019 and an active member of Couples for Christ with his wife. He remained an active supporter of USTEAAI and of the Faculty of Engineering after his stint as President. He is also the proud father of Engr. Paolo Pe (CE Class of 2015) who played with the UST Basketball Team for five years. 鈥淚 am grateful to the University for this opportunity to assist in its long-term plan. The plan for UST-TTCIC is very good, and I am happy to be a part of it,鈥 Engr. JP Pe said.

The UST-TTCIC is a facility that provides the venue in transitioning the Research & Innovation outputs of UST researchers to commercialization. It shall provide the venue in which the University makes available a range of expert and technical services to business owners among UST stakeholders with particular attention to the micro- small- and medium-scale enterprises (MSMEs). As such, it will house the Center for Research Commercialization and Entrepreneurship, which will include the TOMASInno Center (TIC) – the Technology Business Incubator (TBI) of the University. 鈥淲ith the University鈥檚 vision for UST-TTCIC鈥檚 role in our long-term plans to take Research & Innovation to the next level, it is important for us that the first fit-out project in the building is one that involves giving thanks to God and reaching out to our new community in praise of God. We didn鈥檛 have to explain this in many words to Engr. Pe. He was immediately on board,鈥 Prof. Marcelo said.

A group of UST officials met with Engr. Pe at the UST-TTCIC for a walk-through and to explain the design of the chapel. They were pleasantly surprised when Engr. Pe handed them his gift in the middle of the discussion. The UST Santa Rosa Team was composed of Prof. Marcelo and Engr. Shikara P. Poblete-Jose, MSc (Project Management Assistant). They were joined by the project designer, Ar. Paulo Cabatit of the Facilities Management Office (FMO). 鈥淚 hope that more Thomasians, especially Thomasian engineers, could be given the opportunity to be a part of the development of UST Santa Rosa and the whole UST, particularly in showing their expertise as builders. We are ready to help,鈥 Engr. Pe said.

A life of great service

In his homily, fr. Tiong, on the occasion of the Feast of St. James the Apostle, thanked the retirees for their many years of service, 鈥渙ne of the central themes of the day鈥檚 Gospel.鈥 鈥淭his [gratitude] is really something that comes from the heart of the University鈥ecause鈥ou have graced the University by your presence, by your very person,鈥 fr. Tiong said in his homily.

During the testimonial, Prof. Peralta lauded the retirees for molding their students鈥 character and empowering them to contribute positive changes in the world through education. 鈥淎s you step into the next chapter of your lives in retirement, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all of you for selflessly dedicating yourselves to molding young minds, motivating discouraged hearts, and uplifting dampened spirits that allowed Thomasian students, alumni, and university staff reach what they are today,鈥 Peralta said.

In his message, fr. Ang stated that seasoned teachers have fulfilled their roles when students finally develop their own moral compass to guide them in life and extend their learnings beyond the classroom, as well as getting remembered for acknowledging and treating them well. 鈥淭hey will remember how well you treated them, how they felt valued and cared for, and how you recognized their unique gifts and talents,鈥 fr. Ang said.

Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Josefin de Alban, Jr. delivered his acceptance speech on behalf of the retirees, emphasizing that the University they served for years will always be their home. 鈥淩etiring faculty members shall never leave UST. We shall never forget,鈥 de Alban said. 鈥淯ST is our home and we always wanted to be in this beloved Pontifical University whenever we are away from her,鈥 he added.

]]>
On August 21, 2019, , Associate Director of the , presented UST鈥檚 Internationalization framework and strategies, on the occasion of the 27th Association of South and Southeast Asian Catholic Colleges and Universities (ASEACCU), held in Sogang University, South Korea.

For the students, the institution, the global community

Santiago underscored that internationalization activities redound to benefits for three main sectors: the students, the institution, and the global community.

With the intercultural fluency and soft skills development that students acquire comes a network of international contacts that can jumpstart a career in the international arena and true global citizenship. Such entry into the global workplace of equipped students can bring in the benefits of diversity to the workplace and society, which can become more open and inclusive. Ultimately, such openness to cultures and backgrounds, coupled with the mutual benefits people derive from one another, can redound to peace and order, which are an indirect but desired effect of people living together in harmony.

Talking about the benefit to the institution, Santiago noted that internationalization has aided in the goal of continuous quality improvement, for it, among other things, encouraged discussion and knowledge sharing, attracted talents to the University, created a positive impact on various accreditation efforts and even world rankings, as well as opened doors for scholarships, grants, and exchange opportunities through the enhanced networks the University was able to develop.

How UST does it

Santiago also enumerated UST鈥檚 five main internationalization programs, namely Student Mobility Programs, Faculty Diversity, Transnational Researches, Transnational Education, and Internationalization at 探花精选.

For Student Mobility Programs, student exchanges, summer schools, leadership training, discovery tours / academic visits, and research attachments through internships, clinical rotation, and service learning are done.

Apart from sending its students abroad, UST also receives students for mobility programs, for English Language Courses; Tropical Biodiversity and Urban Environment Community Immersion / Internships; Participation in Joint Conferences; and exchange programs funded by the ASEAN International Mobility of Students (AIMS), European Union Support for Higher Education in the ASEAN Region (EU-SHARE) and the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Regional Centre for Higher Education and Development (SEAMEO-RIHED). For the period of 2014-2017, South Korean students accounted for the largest cohort of inbound students, at 22%, with China coming in close at 21%.

Faculty diversity is seen through the slew of Visiting Lecturers and Professors (e.g., from the Linnaeus University 鈥 Sweden), Joint Thematic Conferences, Joint Scientific Activities, and Joint Research Supervision (e.g., Bioanalytical Nanotechnology School 鈥撀Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, Spain).

Currently, Transnational Research has led to at least three global projects, namely the collaboration among Lille 1, CARRTEL, INRA (France); University of Shiga Prefecture (Japan) and National Taiwan University; and the 探花精选 to extend the knowledge base on the effect of global changes, especially climate change, on freshwater plankton.

Currently, there are two researches funded by grants from the Newton Fund of the British Council, namely, the Eco-Social Surveying: Mapping Social Assets, Urban Greenery, and the Connections between Them in Rapidly Changing Cities (between the UST and the University of Reading School of Architecture); and the Affordable Near-Patient Tests for Infectious Diseases in the Philippines (between the UST and and the University of Cambridge).

For Transnational Education, five programs are currently running: 1) 3+2 BS Engineering; 2) 5+1 MS Engineering (both with the Catholic University of America); 3) 1+1 Dual MS Chemical Engineering, major in Metallurgical Engineering (with Curtin University 鈥 Australia); 4) Dual PhD in Built Environment / Architecture (with the University of Reading 鈥 United Kingdom); and the Master of Public Health (International) (with the University of Leeds, with which UST has an articulation agreement).

Finally, Internationalization At 探花精选 is how UST integrates 鈥渋nternational, intercultural, or global dimensions in the teaching and learning that takes place in the campus,鈥 done through learning a foreign language; interaction with international students through the Buddy System, tutorials, cultural activities, and joint activities, as well as integration of internationalization into the curriculum.

To provide better perspective, Santiago also enumerated UST鈥檚 early internationalization efforts, such as the pioneering of health science programs, namely the MS in Audiology (with Macquarie University); MS in Pain Management (with the University of Sydney); and MS in Physical Therapy (with the University of South Australia).

On the part of Brocal and Garcia, who both qualified for the BS-MS Civil Engineering accelerated program, they pursued Construction Management as a field of interest. Brocal鈥檚 paper analyzed short-interval production scheduling, while Garcia compared all existing analysis methods in construction delays. Brocal, Jalova, and Garcia are all set to gain work experience in the United States.

Difficult, challenging, worth it

When asked about what they will say to future cohorts of the dual-degree programs, all four were in unison in saying that the experience brought with it difficulties and challenges that required grit and determination. For her part, Tampon said, 鈥淚t changed me as a person and I couldn鈥檛 imagine myself not having the 2-year experience. So, grab the opportunity while you still can.鈥 Jalova emphasized encounter in his advice, saying: 鈥淲hile studying abroad, you will be exposed to a lot of new cultures and you will be forced to step out of your comfort zone. It is a unique experience of uncomfortable events, but it will make you grow and will bring out the best in you.鈥

The twinning / double-degree program has been operational since 2016 and has two modes: the 3+2 BS Civil Engineering program and the 5+1 MS Civil Engineering program.
