Ms. Anne Parojinog, MS won first place in the Oral Competition of the Biological and Health Sciences category (MS level) for her research entitled 鈥淚ntegrated Urban Ecology: A socio-ecological overview of Metropolitan Manila and bioecological study of its two urban protected forests鈥�.

Meanwhile, Ms. Pauline Maglipon, MS won first place in the Poster Competition of the Agricultural and Environmental Science category for her poster entitled 鈥淪patiotemporal distribution and diversity of plant communities in post fire sites of Mts. Iglit-Baco Natural Park, Occidental Mindoro, Philippines鈥�. Both Ms. Parojinog and Ms. Maglipon were under the supervision of Biological Sciences academic researcher Nikki Heherson Dagamac, Dr.rer.nat.

Another Environmental Biology alumna, Ms. Kamille Poblete, M.Sc. won third place in the Poster Competition of the Biological and Health Sciences category for her research entitled 鈥淭emporal shifts of methane production and methane oxidizing bacteria communities: A limnological assessment in a tropical lake,鈥� which she conducted under the supervision of College of Science Dean Rey Donne S. Papa, PhD.

Lastly, Mr. Theo Victor Cavite of the MS Applied Physics major in Medical Physics program garnered second place in the Poster Competition of the Physical Sciences Category. His poster entitled 鈥淣eutron spectrometry via in-115 activation foil at the Philippines鈥� sole research reactor鈥� was co-authored with his supervisors Dr. Alvie J. Asuncion-Astronomo of the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute and Asst. Prof. Roland Cristopher F. Caballar, Ph.D. of the UST Department of Mathematics and Physics.

These award-winning student researchers are part of the UST delegation composed of 13 DOST scholars, four Graduate School academic staff, and two UST DOST-ASTHRDP office project staff. The 探花精选 is a member of the National Science Consortium (NSC) under the ASTHRDP of the DOST鈥揝cience Education Institute, which oversees the offering of scholarships in flagship Science and Technology graduate programs. UST is represented in the NSC by Dean Papa. First offered in UST in 2010, the DOST-ASTHRDP scholarship has supported 435 Master of Science graduates and 55 doctoral degree graduates. This academic year, there are 70 Master of Science and 6 doctoral students enjoying the scholarship.

Complying with the Congress’s pledge to diversity, researchers from UST gave talks and took part in panels that broadened the discussion on Filipino philosophy and its role in international discourse. Professor Jove Jim S. Aguas of the Department of Philosophy, Graduate School, and Center for Theology, Religious Studies, and Ethics was a major contributor to the Congress. In addition to moderating and chairing the PAP Society Session titled “Filipino Philosophy in Dialogue: Expanding the Conversation,” Aguas contributed to the Center for Research in Values and Philosophy (CRVP) Round Table Discussion on National Values by presenting a paper titled “The Ambiguity of the Filipino Sense of Nationalism and Filipino Identity.”

Aguas also presented the paper entitled “The Relevance of the Metaphysics and the Notions of Being and Analogy of St. Thomas.”

These talks demonstrated the breadth and depth of philosophical study at UST and the contributions made by Filipino academics to international philosophical debates. Additionally, through one-on-one interactions, the Congress gave Filipino scholars a rare chance to fortify relationships and build mutual trust.

The Congress emphasized Rome’s long-standing position as a crossroads of civilizations, and it began with a ceremony at the ancient Baths of Caracalla. Prof. Luca Maria Scarantino, President of FISP, and Prof. Antonella Polimeni, Rector of Sapienza University, both emphasized the merging of humanistic and scientific cultures in philosophical conversations, reinforcing this subject of interconnection in their introductory statements.

Scholars addressed pressing ethical, social, cultural, political, and spiritual concerns all week long. Topics covered included the ethics of artificial intelligence, with discussions on the implications of AI on human decision-making and the ethical responsibilities of AI developers, and the place of spirituality in secular cultures, with debates on the role of spirituality in a modern, secular society. The Congress featured round table discussions, invited sessions, symposia, contributed paper sessions, endowed lectures, plenary sessions, student sessions, and the FISP General Assembly. The goal of these talks was to question conventional wisdom in philosophy by tackling issues of sustainability, gender and cultural diversity, inequality, and other modern world concerns.

Every five years, the WCP is arranged by the Federation Internationale des Soci茅t茅s de Philosophie (FISP) or the International Federation of Philosophical Societies. The WCP is a major conference that brings together philosophers, educators, students, and philosophy aficionados worldwide for a week-long discussion of a certain issue.

Three Thomasian scientists joined foreign researchers in sounding the alarm on potential invasive species that can threaten worldwide biodiversity, a new article published in Global Change Biology revealed.

Master of Science in Biology alumnus Arman N. Pili (now a research affiliate at Monash University), Department of Biological Sciences academic researcher Mae Lowe Diesmos, MSc, and Graduate School academic staff Arvin Diesmos, PhD joined eleven (11) scholars from different parts of the world in the study 鈥淔orecasting potential invaders to prevent future biological invasions worldwide.鈥� Biological invasions, include the introduction of foreign, i.e., alien species, into a given area, have been brought about by the 鈥渆ver-increasing and expanding globalization of trade and transport.鈥�

The study provided a quantitative invasion risk assessment tool based on invasion syndromes (i.e., generalizing typical attributes of invasive alien species). The researchers based on their work on the modelling of invasion syndromes of 466 amphibians and reptile species with invasion history, then used the data to forecast possible invasion for the rest of the 16,236 species worldwide.

Based on their findings, 鈥�160 amphibians and reptiles without known invasion history could be unintentionally transported and introduced in the future,鈥� with 57 posing a 鈥渉igh risk of establishing alien populations.鈥� Such introduction may happen through the accidental transport of fresh produce to a territory by travelers.

In a spinoff article published in The Conversation, Pili and co-researcher David Chapple warned that among the species that can invade Australian biodiversity are the Graceful Chameleon, Common European Viper, and American toad.

The new tool lends itself to 鈥渄eveloping a future-proof preventative biosecurity鈥� system globally.

Both Dr. Arvin and Asst. Prof. Mae Lowe Diesmos are scholars on the systematics, ecology, and conservation of amphibians and reptiles in the Philippines and Southeast Asia.

Bennett was recognized for research efforts as young researcher at the Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences and for his work while a graduate student. Specifically, Bennett鈥檚 work on the taxonomy and evolution of oomycetes was recognized. Building on the comprehensive study by Dogma, Bennett鈥檚 contributions helped 鈥渇ill in the missing literature and knowledge gap in Philippine Oomycetes.鈥� His studies focus on oomycete taxonomy, ecology, and evolution. Recently, he has engaged with fellow Thomasian researchers on the applied aspects of oomycetes such as fatty acids and secondary metabolites. Among his collaborators, are Prof. Dr. Gina Dedeles, Inst. Mark Devanadera, Prof. Dr. Mafel Ysrael, Inst. Nono Caguimbal, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Kim Arafiles.

His current focus is researching with and training students 鈥渨ho are very willing to learn about these organisms,鈥� which he counts as a rarity as the work involves long hours of observations using a microscope to try and decode the oomycetes life cycle and development.

In his interview with the Communications Bureau, Bennett acknowledged College of Science Dean Rey Donne S. Papa, PhD for the nomination and his plant pathology and mycology professor at the UST Graduate School, Prof. Irineo J. Dogma, Jr., PhD, whom he hailed as the 鈥渁uthority on zoosporic fungi.鈥� He also thanked graduate research advisers Prof. Dedeles and Prof. Dr. Marco Thines. In an interview with the Communications Bureau, Jose looks forward to 鈥渕ore awareness of our history and heritage in our daily lives, to shape our values.鈥� In particular, he called on Thomasians to 鈥渂e keenly aware of UST鈥檚 role in shaping Philippine history. This includes, among other things, learning to read historical documents in their original Spanish (in the same way that many like to learn Korean).鈥澛�

Jose is an authority in Church heritage and has published and read papers extensively on Church architecture and art. He continues to engage in the conservation and restoration of built heritage of Churches and works with government and non-government agencies alike. In the National Commission on Culture and the Arts, he chaired the Committee on Monuments and Sites (2001-2004), Committee on Archives (2011-2013), and Commissioner for Cultural Heritage (2011-2013). In 1999, he was feted with the Cultural Center of the Philippines Centennial Award for the Arts.

The NHCP is the country鈥檚 鈥減rimary government agency responsible for history and has the authority to determine all factual matters relating to official Philippine history.鈥� Among its mandates are to support and engage in research activities on Philippine history, its people, and important events. It maintains a historical data bank and Resource Center and recognizes places of historical significance.

RCSSED Director Jeremaiah M. Opiniano (The University of Adelaide) won the 2024 Dissertation Award from the Mixed Methods International Research Association (MMIRA) for his doctoral project titled “Overseas Remittances and Rural 探花精选town Investing: Towards an Understanding of the Migration-and-Local Development Nexus.”聽

His PhD project, in May 2021, had already won the John Lewis Medal of Excellence for Outstanding Doctoral Research in Geography, from the Royal Geographical Society of South Australia (RGSSA), where Adelaide belongs.

MMIRA鈥檚 dissertation awards, the Association said, 鈥渞ecognize a beginning scholar completing original research whose dissertation has made an outstanding contribution to the field of mixed methods research鈥�.聽 Applicants to the 2024 MMIRA dissertation award must have the PhD thesis or dissertation defended / passed during the period December 1, 2020 to September 30, 2023.

Meanwhile, RCSSED Assistant Director Pia Patricia P. Tenedero (Macquarie University) will receive this year’s Virginia A. Miralao Excellence in Research Award (VAMERA) from the Philippine Social Science Council (PSSC).

Tenedero won the award for her book titled聽Communication that Counts: Language Practice and Ideology in Globalized Accounting聽that comes from her PhD thesis at Macquarie University. The book was published as part of the聽Language at Work聽series by publisher Multilingual Matters, based in Bristol in the United Kingdom.

VAMERA honors former PSSC Executive Director Dr. Virginia Miralao, and the prize comes from a 2012 grant to PSSC by Professor Emerita Dr. Belinda Aquino of the University of Hawaii at Manoa in the US. The award, handed out to a published journal article, book chapter or book, serves as an incentive (i.e., below 45 years old) 鈥渢o pursue original and meaningful research鈥�.

Tenedero, currently an honorary research fellow at Macquarie鈥檚 Department of Linguistics, will receive a unique trophy made by noted visual artist Toym Leon Imao.

Both awardees belong to the Faculty of Arts and Letters‘ Journalism and English programs, respectively.

Drs. Yan Tan (primary) and Dianne Marie Rudd (co-supervisor) advised Opiniano鈥檚 project, while Distinguished Professor Ingrid Piller and Dr. Loy Lising acted as primary and co-supervisors, respectively of Tenedero.

The individual citations of the two officials come as RCSSED received the Outstanding Research Institution Award, for Social Sciences and the Humanities, from the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) last March.

In an interview with the Communications Bureau, Papa said the awards came as a surprise, as she was 鈥渘ever informed of the nominations.鈥� Instead, the selection by RFS was done among female scientists worldwide.

Papa, a Microbiology professor at the College of Science and the Graduate School, specializes in bacterial viruses or bacteriophages. In the professional circles, she was the former President of the Philippine Society of Microbiology. She has also won awards, such as the National Academy of Science and Technology Outstanding Scientific Paper for her work on Salmonella treatment. In 2023, she joined international experts for the very first hands-on Bacteriophage Workshop in Southeast Asia. At the moment, she is working on phage therapy as an alternative to antibiotics given the rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Papa acknowledged the support of her family, her mentors Prof. Irineo J. Dogma, Jr., Dr. Hans Ackermann, and her students.

Lintao has been elected to lead the 55-year old organization from 2024 to 2027. She was Vice President in 2021-2024 and Treasurer from 2018-2021. She is at the helm of the 12-member board of directors who are from varied institutions and organizations in the country and abroad, namely, De La Salle University, Ateneo de Manila University, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, University of the Philippines Diliman, Ateneo de Zamboanga, MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology, University of Hawaii in Hilo, and Summer Institute of Linguistics.

Lintao is the fourth LSP president from UST. The former presidents include Asst. Prof. Anna Maria Gloria Ward, Prof. Marilu Madrunio, PhD, and Prof. Alejandro S. Bernardo, PhD who are all from the Department of English. Ward and Madrunio currently sit in the LSP board.

Lintao鈥檚 research interests include forensic linguistics. Among her recent publications are 鈥淧ower, Control, and Resistance in Philippine and American Police Interview Discourse鈥� (co-authored with Ma. Kaela Joselle R. Madrunio) and 鈥淩eadability and comprehensibility of Malaysian construction contracts鈥� (co-authored with Noushad Ali Naseem Ameer Ali).
