The 探花精选 is the Philippine partner of the United States Agency for International Development, the RTI International, and Arizona State University in rolling out the US-Philippines Partnership for Skills, Innovation, and Lifelong Learning (UPSKILL), particularly its DESIGN COLLABORATORY: Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education.

The collaboratory is a four-part webinar series featuring Thomasian experts. Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Cheryl R. Peralta, DrPH provided the overview of Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education on August 12, 2024, while Educational Technology Center Acting Director April Joy M. Gascon, MAN, RN spoke about Innovating Teaching and Learning with AI.

On August 28, 2024, College of Education Assistant Dean Louie B. Dasas, PhD will discuss (Re)Designing Learning Assessments with AI in Mind, while Institute of Religion academic researcher Leo-Martin Angelo R. Ocampo, MA will close the series with the talk 鈥淪trengthening Humanity and Human Agency in the Era of Artificial Intelligence,鈥 in a big to refocus the discourse on the role of humans in the use of technology.

Professor Valentin C. Dones III, PhD, Director of the Center for Health Research and Movement Science and academic researcher of the Department of Physical Therapy, was named the Outstanding Professional of the Year 2024 in the field of Physical Therapy by the Professional Regulation Commission, which conferred the awards on August 2, 2024 (Friday).

In a message to the Thomasian community, Dones called on Thomasians to 鈥渂e driven by a passion to serve others as a gift from God,鈥 to whom he dedicates the victory, along with his family. As a lifelong member of a Dominican academic community, Dones shares the importance of prayer and 鈥渙ffering every action as a form of worship.鈥 Dones said: 鈥淲e are called to perform our duties with love, thank those who support us, forgive those who have wronged us, and see every task as an opportunity to thank and praise God.鈥

Dones was nominated by the accredited professional organization, the Philippine Physical Therapy Association (PPTA), which vetted nominees based on qualifications, professional activities, character, and most importantly, contributions to the profession. Dones鈥檚 nomination by PPTA emanated from the nominations of CHRMS academic researchers Asst. Prof. Lyle Patrick D. Tangcuangco and Inst. Mark Angel B. Serra.

Dones is a research fellow at St. Luke鈥檚 Medical Center and is involved in two projects funded by the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). His various research projects address issues such as hospitalized COVID-19 patient outcomes, hepatocellular carcinoma risks, hypertensive urgency and emergency, and the delivery of blended teaching in health science programs.

Also an innovator, he is the Chief Executive Officer of PainFree Management and Consulting, Inc., which is a grant awardee of the DOST-PCHRD and an incubatee of UST鈥檚 own TOMASInno Center, the in-house technology business incubator.

The 探花精选 was named the 2nd top-performing school after notching a 97.44% passing rate, or 152 passers, in the December 2023 Physical Therapists Licensure Exams, administered by the Professional Regulation Commission.

In the topnotchers list, John Sundiam Ramos, PTRP ranked 3rd with his 89.35% score. Anna Nicole Baroquillo Mantuano, PTRP followed Ramos at 4th place with her 89.30% personal rating. Lastly, at #5, Precious Louvelle Noche Carambas PTRP scored 89.05%.

Three of the College of Rehabilitation Sciences programs have received new accreditation certifications from the Federation of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippines (FAAP). Two programs, BS Physical Therapy and BS Occupational Therapy, received fresh five-year accreditations valid until 2027, while the BS Sports Science program is now formally accredited as a Level I program, with the status valid until 2025. The three programs underwent the remote virtual accreditation by the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA) from May 23-24, 2022.

A Level IV program recognized by the FAAP are considered to be 鈥渉ighly respected as very high academic programs in the Philippines and with prestige and authority comparable to similar programs in excellent foreign universities.鈥 The BS PT and BS OT programs have been granted full autonomy and the authority to offer new allied graduate programs and open learning/distance education and extension classes subject to information provided to the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

For the Level I accreditation, BS Sports Science now enjoys full administrative deregulation, financial deregulation, and authority to revise the curriculum without prior CHED approval. It is likewise given priority in the awards of grants/subsidies or funding assistance from CHED or the Department of Education.

BS-Occupational Therapy alumna Anne Marydon V. Lariosa earned the top spot in the after garnering an 81% personal rating. Meanwhile, for the , BS-Physical Therapy alumni Yuji U. Espejo and Krisma Shantal G. Ponsaran shared the third top score after tallying an 87.55% personal rating.

For the third consecutive year, the Department of Physical Therapy posted a 100% passing rate, producing 18 newly licensed Thomasian Physical Therapists, while the Department of Occupational Therapy likewise produced eight newly licensed Thomasian Occupational Therapists.

The Physical and Occupational Therapy Licensure Examination, administered by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), was held on June 3 and 4, 2022.

Graduates of the University鈥檚 BS Physical Therapy program posted a perfect passing rate in the December 2021 licensure examinations for physical therapists administered by the Professional Regulation Commission.

Andrea Joyce F. Ansong, PTRP led the 40-member Thomasian contingent by landing in the #10 spot with a score of 87.30%.

The examinations were held in Manila, Baguio, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, and San Fernando.

Asst. Prof. Christian Rey D. Rimando, MSPT, PTRP and Asst. Prof. Donald G. Manlapaz, PhD, PTRP have been elected as officials of the Philippine Physical Therapy Association, Inc. (PPTA) for a term spanning the years 2022-2023, results released on December 5, 2021 revealed.

Rimando joins the Board of Officers are the Vice-President for Internal Affairs, while Manlapaz, the Chair of UST’s Physical Therapy Department, is joining as a Director of PPTA.

The Philippine Physical Therapy Association, Inc. (PPTA) is the national professional organization of physical therapists in the Philippines. It is an accredited professional organization of the Philippine Regulation Commission. PPTA is also a member organization of the World Physiotherapy (formerly World Confederation for Physical Therapy) and the Asian Confederation for Physical Therapy.

As part of the virtual clinical internship activities of the Department of Physical Therapy, the College of Rehabilitation Sciences recently launched the Tiger Sports Freehub, with the virtual event announcing the opening of the clinic held on August 25, 2021.

The Tiger Sports Freehub provides 鈥渇ree rehabilitation and strength and conditioning services to all enrolled Thomasian student athletes. The exercise programs are strengthened through interprofessional collaboration among PT, SPS, coaches, and medical doctors. The platforms used are Facebook Page, Facebook Group, and Zoom,鈥 according to Chief Physical Therapist Ken Erbvin R. Sosa, MOH, PTRP, PT. The virtual clinic is also run by Sports Science department supervisors, namely, Gino V. Zapanta, XPS and Kris Anthony T. Agarao, MSHMS.

Thomasian athletes who want to avail of the services may do so by liking the Facebook page of the clinic and joining the Zoom meeting for initial screening. Student interns, under the guidance of their mentors from CRS, will handle the athletes and provide the necessary healthcare services.

In attendance during the virtual launch were University officials, led by Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Cheryl R. Peralta, DrPH, College of Rehabilitation Sciences officials led by Dean Anne Marie C. Aseron, MSPT, Physical Therapy and Sports Science Department Chairs Donald G. Manlapaz, PhD and Reil Vinard S. Espino, as well as Health Service Director Sheryl M. Dionisio, MD and Athletics Moderator Rodrigo A. Sambuang, Jr. of the Institute of Physical Education and Athletics.

Ms. Catherine Joy T. Escuadra, MHPEd, was re-appointed as a Programme Committee Member of the World Physiotherapy Congress, which will have its next run in 2023.

Escuadra, who had served in the same capacity in the 2019 WPC and as abstract reviewer and research presenter in 2019 and 2021, is no stranger to organizing student and professional congresses in both the country and the Asia region.

Escuadra teaches at the Department of Physical Therapy and is one of the e-Learning Specialists of the College of Rehabilitation Sciences. She represents not only the University but also the country, through her involvement in the Philippine Physical Therapy Association.
