Five students of the BS Speech-Language Pathology program of the College of Rehabilitation Sciences bagged the Best Curriculum Poster Award in the SLP International Network Summer School hosted by the University of Malta from August 18-25, 2024.

BS-SLP students Mariela Anya Sori帽o, Kathleen Megan Torres, Emilia Andrea Coronel, Robert Anthony Bertumen, and Vinz Adrian Chan were under the supervision of Inst. John Arden Romanillos, MHPEd, RSLP, who together showcased how UST runs its BS-SLP program.

First offered in 2009, the four-year bachelor鈥檚 degree program involves at least 1,200 hours of supervised clinical training in various settings, such as the community and hospital. Such training endeavors allow students to screen, evaluate, and assess patients and help in individual and group therapy sessions. Apart from equipping students to handle concerns on speech, language, and swallowing disorders, aural habilitation and rehabilitation and augmentative and alternative communication are integrated in the curriculum.

Graduates of the program may proceed to take advanced studies in the fields of health professions education, clinical audiology, and medicine (all offered in UST), bringing with them sound training in practice and research. The Department of Speech-Language Pathology includes as part of its thrusts the conduct of research that will adapt and make culturally relevant SLP interventions, develop evidence-based practices, and promote professional growth and continuing education.

The 探花精选 forged a multi-HEI partnership with the Thomas More University of Applied Sciences and the Katholieke Universiteit or KU Leuven to conduct a short initiative research project to empower Persons With Disabilities (PWD) in the Philippines through interprofessional telerehabilitation.

Addressing the regional challenges due to the lack of interprofessional telerehabilitation services for adults living in Binangonan, Rizal, this project aims to pave the way for capacity-building opportunities for societal stakeholders that will enable them to support, provide the said services, and take on leadership roles in the community to develop local policies.

On the University鈥檚 behalf, the College of Rehabilitation Sciences (CRS) is the key academic unit involved in the project. The College formed the UST-CRS Research Group to lead and conduct disability profiling and seek facilitators and barriers in working telerehabilitation in the said area.

The CRS Research Group is undergoing capacity training, aided by Thomas More University鈥檚 research and education expertise on telerehabilitation and KU Leuven鈥檚 expertise on digital education and technology through inter-institutional collaboration.

In terms of academics, the said project is expected to produce an evidence-based introduction and design of an effective telerehabilitation program for PWDs, demonstrate interprofessional collaboration in the implementation of telerehabilitation program, and integrate the development of e-learning tools in conducting research related to disability profiling and telerehabilitation in the curricula.

At the societal level, the project will equip and enrich the PWDs鈥 understanding of telerehabilitation services and access.

The project is expected to be completed on August 31, 2025.

The 探花精选 was hailed as the university with the most accredited programs in the country and in the National Capital Region by the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA), during its 50th anniversary celebration on December 1, 2023 (Friday).

Apart from the two distinctions, UST was also recognized for having the most number of Level IV accredited programs in the country. Level IV is the highest rating a program can get. Programs enjoying this status “have been highly respected as very high academic programs in the Philippines and with prestige and authority comparable to similar programs in excellent foreign universities,” according to PACUCOA.

Meanwhile, four bachelor’s programs were also recognized for producing topnotchers in recent Professional Regulation Commission licensure exams, namely, BS Medical Technology, BS Accountancy, BS Nutrition and Dietetics, and BS Architecture.

UST also won an award for the community outreach/extension program contest. The College of Science bagged Second Prize for “CCHEERS聽to Laudato si: Care for our Common 探花精选 through Environmental Expedition Integrating the role of Service-Learning.”

Thomasian professors were also recognized by PACUCOA. Graduate School academic staff Lucila O.
