A life of great service

In his homily, fr. Tiong, on the occasion of the Feast of St. James the Apostle, thanked the retirees for their many years of service, 鈥渙ne of the central themes of the day鈥檚 Gospel.鈥 鈥淭his [gratitude] is really something that comes from the heart of the University鈥ecause鈥ou have graced the University by your presence, by your very person,鈥 fr. Tiong said in his homily.

During the testimonial, Prof. Peralta lauded the retirees for molding their students鈥 character and empowering them to contribute positive changes in the world through education. 鈥淎s you step into the next chapter of your lives in retirement, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all of you for selflessly dedicating yourselves to molding young minds, motivating discouraged hearts, and uplifting dampened spirits that allowed Thomasian students, alumni, and university staff reach what they are today,鈥 Peralta said.

In his message, fr. Ang stated that seasoned teachers have fulfilled their roles when students finally develop their own moral compass to guide them in life and extend their learnings beyond the classroom, as well as getting remembered for acknowledging and treating them well. 鈥淭hey will remember how well you treated them, how they felt valued and cared for, and how you recognized their unique gifts and talents,鈥 fr. Ang said.

Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Josefin de Alban, Jr. delivered his acceptance speech on behalf of the retirees, emphasizing that the University they served for years will always be their home. 鈥淩etiring faculty members shall never leave UST. We shall never forget,鈥 de Alban said. 鈥淯ST is our home and we always wanted to be in this beloved Pontifical University whenever we are away from her,鈥 he added.

The ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance granted a fresh five-year certification to the University鈥檚 bachelor鈥檚 programs in Accountancy (UST-Alfredo M. Velayo College of Accoutancy), Biology, Chemistry, and Psychology (College of Science), according to Academic Programs Quality Assurance Office Director Marife V. Narcida MS. The results, released on June 8, 2023, come after the three-day programme assessment conducted by AUN-QA experts from May 2-4, 2023.

According to UST-Alfredo M. Velayo College of Accountancy Dean Patricia M. Empleo, PhD, the College鈥檚 鈥渙bjective is to continue enhancing the quality of our academic programs, not necessarily for external accreditation or assessment, but more so for our stakeholders (learners and industry partners especially) who rely on us for the provision of the much-needed accounting professionals. We integrate the AUNQA framework and see it as an effective tool for continuous quality improvement.鈥

Meanwhile, College of Science Dean Rey Donne S. Papa, PhD looked back at the five-year journey to re-certification that the College undertook: 鈥淭he good news we just received from the AUN validates that the improvements we have instituted had addressed the majority, if not all, of the concerns and points for improvement that they had provided us after their first visit in 2017. This includes the revision of our curricula for the Biology, Chemistry, and Psychology programs and the increased research productivity of the departments concerned, as well as the transfer of our laboratories to the Central Laboratory Building. We will continue to strive for excellence in all aspects of our operations as we start planning for the AUN assessment of other programs such as Microbiology, Applied Mathematics and Applied Physics in the near future. I am extremely thankful for our hardworking and dynamic team of academic and support staff and students who have worked hard to ensure that we meet the standards set by the AUN.鈥

The three-day assessment led by AUN-QA Expert Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tan Kay Chuan coincided with an assessors鈥 training with attendees from five Southeast Asian countries. The re-certification maintains UST鈥檚 18 bachelor鈥檚 programs on top of the Institutional Certification UST enjoys from AUN-QA.

From May 2-4, 2023, the 探花精选 was the site of the 326th Programme Assessment conducted by the ASEAN University Network – Quality Assurance. The assessment, which was the first onsite assessment of UST since the pandemic, was geared toward the re-certification of the first four programs to receive AUN-QA鈥檚 stamp of approval: BS Accountancy, BS Biology (now with specializations in Environmental Biology, Industrial Biology, and Medical Biology), BS Chemistry, and BS Psychology.

The assessment team was led by AUN-QA Training Expert and Chief Assessor Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tan Kay Chuan (Lead Assessor, BS Psychology). He was joined by Prof. Dr. Rohaida Mohammad Saat (Lead Assessor, BS Accountancy), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ornsiri Cheunsuang (Lead Assessor, BS Biology), Prof. Wan Ahmad Kamil Mahmood, PhD (Lead Assessor, BS Chemistry), Dr. Nguyen Thi Huyen (Assessor, BS Accountancy), Mr. Mean Udam (Assessor, BS Biology), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Supitcha Cheevapruk (Assessor, BS Chemistry), and Asst. Prof. Dr. Luerat Anuratpanich (Assessor, BS Psychology).

In their respective messages, Rector fr. Richard G. Ang, O.P., PhD and Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Cheryl R. Peralta, DrPH reaffirmed the University鈥檚 commitment to improving its provision of quality Catholic education by submitting to external review from international experts. The assessments, UST鈥檚 7th so far, uses the updated version of the AUN-QA programme assessment tool. The visit included interviews with various stakeholders like students, academic staff, support staff, employers, and alumni, among others, and included site visits and document review.

Chief Assessor Tan, in his wrap-up presentation, invited the University officials to consider the VUCA world鈥檚 challenges and changes. He noted, among others, the increasing impact of artificial intelligence on pedagogy, which he said must keep up with latest technological trends. The assessors likewise cited the University鈥檚 various program strengths, including the functional internal quality assurance systems at the program, college, and university levels, and the positive feedback from different stakeholders. The assessors also presented points for improvement in preparation for a post-pandemic world.

The onsite assessment was held in conjunction with the 13th Assessor Training Workshop of AUN-QA, who provided the training to experts from Brunei Darusallam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The 探花精选 reached its highest number of scholarly materials indexed in Scopus in 2022.

Running tally from Scopus, the Elsevier-owned scholarly indexing service, as of February 27, 2023 shows that UST (Scopus ID number: 60071488) had 354 scholarly materials (mostly journal articles) in 2022. Scopus adds that the 354 materials are broken down into published works (318) and 鈥渁rticles in press鈥 (36). These materials were authored solely by Thomasians or were co-authored by Thomasians and research partners from other academic and non-academic affiliations.

The 354 materials cover journal articles (274), book reviews (35), conference papers lodged in proceedings (22), 鈥渘otes鈥 (22), book chapters (six), letters to the editor (six), editorials (two) and erratum (1). Spanning multiple disciplinal areas, the leading disciplines where the scholarly materials were lodged came from 鈥淢edicine鈥 (128), 鈥淪ocial Sciences鈥 (62), 鈥淎gricultural and Biological Sciences鈥 (42), 鈥淏iochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology鈥 (40), and 鈥淎rts and Humanities鈥 (32). The UST materials landed in 26 categorizations of disciplines in the Scopus database for 2022.

This 2022 total is the highest since Scopus tallied scholarly works authored by researchers鈥攆aculty members and students鈥攆rom UST since 1946.

Among those currently affiliated with UST, the top producers of Scopus-indexed academic journal articles tallied in 2022 is Prof. Daniel Joseph Berdida of the College of Nursing (15), Prof. Marc Eric Reyes, PhD of the College of Science (13), Prof. Frederick Masangkay of the Faculty of Pharmacy (11), former Faculty of Engineering academic staff Adrvin Kester Ong (11), Prof. Ross Vasquez, PhD of the Faculty Pharmacy (11), Prof. Marri Jmelou Roldan also of the Faculty of Pharmacy (10), and Prof. Allan de Guzman, PhD of the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (10).

Meanwhile, out of the 2,042 journal articles that Thomasian researchers have produced for Scopus-indexed journals since Scopus began the count, De Guzman has produced the most number: 129. Professors Grecebio Jonathan Alejandro, Dr. rer. nat. of the Graduate School and the College of Science (97), Thomas Edison E. dela Cruz, Dr. rer. nat. (63), Fortunato B. Sevilla III, PhD (60), Allan Patrick Macabeo, Dr. rer. nat. of the College of Science (55), Raymond Rosales, MD (53) of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, Rey Donne S. Papa, PhD (47) of the College of Science, Marc Eric S. Reyes, PhD (44) of the College of Science, and Sandra Navarra, MD (42) of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery followed suit.

The 探花精选 Hospital (Scopus ID: 60071489), for its part, has separately produced 509 scholarly materials since 1955, and 45 in 2022. Medical doctors teaching at UST also affiliate themselves with the UST Hospital.

The Scopus index is the database used by Times Higher Education (THE) and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) when tallying the research productivity of universities in their annual world university rankings. UST has been ranked in the QS World University Rankings for multiple years, and recently received a 鈥淩eporter鈥 status in the 2023 THE World University Rankings last year.

The running tally of scholarly materials indexed in Scopus shows that UST produced 225 materials in 2017, 175 in 2018, 228 in 2019, 278 in 2020, and 333 in 2021.
