The Research Center for Social Sciences and Education (RCSSEd) and the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (CTHM) 鈥 UST Sentro Turismo officially turned over a 10-year Sustainable Tourism and Strategic Development Plan for Barangay San Miguel, Echague, Isabela on August 19, 2024 (Monday).

The plan aimed to assess the potential of Barangay San Miguel in Echague, Isabela, for sustainable community-based tourism in the new and next normal. It also determined the current situation of the barangay, specifically its community-based tourism industry development, analyzed different related issues, constraints, and opportunities of the barangay for community-based tourism industry development, assessed the perspectives and views of different stakeholders on the sustainability and development of the barangay鈥檚 tourism resources, assessed tourism development impacts, specifically on the barangay鈥檚 economic, socio-cultural, and environmental aspects, and developed a sustainable community-based tourism strategic development framework and sustainability indicators for Barangay San Miguel, Echague, Isabela.

The Office of Hon. Faustino 鈥淚nno鈥 A. Dy V of the 6th District of Isabela initiated the project and was supported by the Municipal Government of Echague, Isabela. The turnover activity was conducted at the Blessed Jane of Aza Lounge, Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, O.P. Building.

Mr. Louie Simbe, the Municipal Tourism, Culture, and Arts Officer of the Municipality, and Ms. Claire Santiago, the Political Affairs Assistant under the Office of Cong. Inno officially received the plan. Officials from the DOST NRCP also attended the event. It was headed by Dr. Aimee Lynn Barrion-Dupo (President) and Dr. Bernardo N. Sepeda (Executive Director). While RCSSEd was represented by its Director, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jeremaiah M. Opiniano.

#TeamKomunidad of the UST CTHM and Sentro Turismo spearheaded the project under the leadership of Asst. Prof. Jame Monren T. Mercado, MACHS, with the team members, Asst. Prof. Dr. Avi Ben P. Andalecio, Dr. Fhamela F. Sarmiento, Asst. Prof. Maria Concepcion A. Ang, Assistant Dean Assoc. Prof. Dr. Evangeline E. Timbang, and Dean Assoc. Prof. Dr. Atty. Gezzez Giezi G. Granado.

The plan was an output of the project entitled 鈥淪ustainable Community-based Tourism Potential and Development of Barangay San Miguel, Echague, Isabela in the New/Next Normal.鈥 The project was also part of the 1st batch of the Policy-funded Research Projects under the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

The Ritz-Carlton in Hong Kong will be home of interns from the different programs of the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management, which sent off thirty-two (32) of its students on a 5-month internship journey. The interns started their international training on August 5, 2024 and will return after December 20, 2024. The group, assisted by their professors, Mr. Wyett White T. Lee and Ms. Kathrine Camille Nagal, together with the Hospitality Management Department Chairperson, Dr. Fhamela F. Sarmiento and Dean, Atty. Gezzez Giezi G. Granado, arrived in Hong Kong to register at the Philippine Consulate and begin their internship journey.

BS Hospitality Management, major in Culinary Entrepreneurship students from the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management garnered medals at the 14th Philippine Culinary Cup, held from July 31 to August 3, 2024, at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. The Philippine Culinary Cup is an internationally recognized platform that highlights the skills and talents of Filipino Chefs and is the only World Chefs Certified Competition in the country.

In the Dream Team Challenge, Ben Patrick B. Judrial, Danica A. Lara, and Patricia Beatrice D. Penoliar, with assistance from James Michael M. Araneta, won Silver. Chef Ramona Olga D. Ko and Chef Kathlyn Tisha G. Ortaliz served as coaches.  

Sofia Angela M. Paja also brought home Silver for the Plant-Based Desserts Category. She was assisted by Miguel Luis Rodriguez and coached by Chef Kathlyn Tisha G. Ortaliz.

Meanwhile, Adrian G. Zapata and Thomas Angelo E. Monasterio IV won the Highest Bronze for the Young Chef Challenge, for which they were assisted by Amie Margaret Nazareno and coached by Chef Ramona Olga D. Ko.  

Mikaela Margaret N. Dimaano also won the Highest Bronze in the Dress the Cake category. She was assisted by Arianna Ysabel A. Pascual and coached by Chef Everest De Leon and Chef Maria Karmel Grace A. Labay.  

For the Wedding Cakes Display Category, Sophia Lorenz P. Aga won Bronze. She was assisted by Atasha Bettina T. Delgado, Zyd Marcee Esguerra, Joaquin Gabriel C. Robles, and Sean Gabrielle B. Sunga. Chef Reinald A. Andaya served as her coach.  

Daniel Zoe V. Dalipe won Bronze in the US Poultry category and was assisted by Earl Joshua Lipata and coached by Chef Ramona Olga D. Ko.

Student delegates who represented UST in other competitions are as follows: Rod Fredric S. Villamarin competed in the Creative Breakfast Challenge, assisted by Alexis John R. Se帽oron and coached by Chef Ramona Olga D. Ko; For the Filipino Cuisine Challenge, Von Marion C. Cabrera and Alan Jefri Macaraeg, assisted by Joab Tan and coached by Chef Ramona Olga D. Ko and Chef Reinald A. Andaya, for the Filipino Cuisine Challenges. Emilio Andres P. Aganinta participated in the Pasta Category, assisted by Patrick Jericho G. Perez and coached by Chef Ramona Olga D. Ko. In the Plant-Based Diet Meals Category, Sophia Isabelle V. Hernandez was a participant. She was assisted by John Anthony J. Three academic staff of the University comprised half of the finalists/winners of the 2024 National Academy of Science and Technology Talent Search for Young Scientists (NAST TSYS), which conferred the recognition this July 2024.

Winning the Third Prize is Inst. John Andrew C. Albay, PhD of the Department of Mathematics and Physics for his work聽 “Colloidal Heat Engine Driven by Engineered Active Noise.” Albay becomes the first NAST TSYS awardee of the Department.

Receiving citations are Inst. Katherine Yasmin M. Garcia, MS of the Department of Chemistry and Asst. Prof. Jame Monren T. Mercado, MA of the Department of Tourism Management.

Garcia was recognized for her work entitled 鈥淎ntiproliferative and Cytotoxic Cytochalasins from 饾槡饾槺饾槩饾槼饾樀饾槳饾槫饾槹饾槶饾槩 饾樀饾槼饾槳饾槾饾槮饾槺饾樀饾槩饾樀饾槩 Inhibit Action Polymerization and Aggregation.”

Meanwhile, Mercado, who is an academic researcher of the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education, was recognized for his work entitled 鈥淵sla de Panciteria: A Preliminary Study on the Culinary Heritage Significance of Pancit Using the Heritage Documentation Approach 鈥 the Case of Luzon Island, Philippines.鈥 Mercado co-authored the work with Dr. Avi Ben Andalecio, also of the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management.

The College of Tourism and Hospitality Management bagged the 1st Runner-up Award at The Philippine MICE (Meetings, Incentive, Conferences and Exhibitions) Youth Challenge 2024, held last July 10, 2024 during the Philippine MICE Conference 2024 organized by the Philippine Tourism Promotions Board.

The team was composed of BS Tourism Management students, namely: Kyle Alexandra A. Mararac, Krishna Andrei O. Martinzo, Alyssa Shane P. Paguio, and Solomon M. Santiago under their event production, Lunggati Creations. This year’s event proposal entry is entitled, “MANGAN! Biyaheng Pampanga, a Dine and Ride Adventure!”

The team were under the guidance and supervision of their academic advisers Asst. Prof. Maria Concepcion A. Ang, MBA, and Inst. John Jerick C. Santos, MLOL. Additionally, the Tourism Promotions Board appointed Mr. Anton Magpantay as an industry coach to better align the wholeness of the event business proposal to the practice of the industry.

The College of Tourism and Hospitality Management, through its UST Sentro Turismo, conducted Pagsibol Ormoc City on June 28, 2024 (Friday) at the Ormoc City Hall, Province of Leyte. Pagsibol Ormoc City concentrated on presenting and officially submitting the Sustainable Strategic Tourism Development Plan 2023-2028, which conceptualized a sustainable strategic tourism development plan for the City based on the value- and rights-based developmental approach through cultural and heritage significance, current internal and external environments, the tourism and hospitality-related plans and implemented programs and projects, and the perspectives of different primary and secondary stakeholders.

The project is in partnership with the City Government, represented by its Mayor, Hon. Lucy Torres-Gomez, Hon. Richard I. Gomez, DPA (Congressman, 4th District of Leyte), the members of the Sanggunian Panlungsod Committee on Tourism, Culture, Heritage, and the Arts, the City Tourism Council, and the Ormoc City Tourism Office. At the same time, the 探花精选 was represented by the Assistant Dean of the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Evangeline E. Timbang, and the members of the project team.

Mayor Torres-Gomez pointed out during her Message of Appreciation that the plan will provide them with significant measures for conceptualizing their programs and projects for the sustainable tourism development of the city. It also allowed the government to be aware of the current negative situations in the Ormoc Tourism Industry that it must address. After the output presentation, the Sanggunian Committee approved the Resolution adopting the plan.

The UST College of Tourism and Hospitality Management was co-host of the 16th Philippine Food Expo, a 3-day celebration of Filipino culinary expertise. The event was held at the World Trade Center Metro Manila last April 12-14, 2024. The event鈥檚 theme for this year was Western Visayas. The event was marked by various culinary competitions, cooking demos, seminars, and a large exhibition of over 300 vendors.

As co-host, CTHM handled the Culinary Challenge Competition Briefing, held on March 3, 2024, at the Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, O.P. (BGPOP) Building鈥檚 Multi-function Room (MFR), while the Food Styling & Photography Competition was also held at the BGPOP Lobby and Mezzanine on March 23, 2024. Both events were internally organized by the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (CTHM) 3HCE1鈥檚 Solasta Productions, led by Mr. Wyett White Lee as the course facilitator and Mr. Rod Fredric S. Villamarin as the Overall Chairperson, as part of their partial fulfillment of the requirements for THM52027: Introduction to Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events Management.

The highly anticipated event commenced with a remarkable turnout, welcoming 3,074 guests on its opening, where The 探花精选 Chorus of Arts and Letters set the tone for the event with a moving invocation followed by a stirring rendition of the national anthem.

The expo’s opening statements were delivered by a roster of prominent figures who have played pivotal roles in the agriculture and food industry. Among them were Mr. Roberto Angelo O. Amores II, Director of PhilFoodEx; Hon. Cynthia A. Villar, the Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food; Hon. Francisco Tiu P. Laurel Jr., Secretary of the Department of Agriculture; Mr. William Tiu Lim, also a Director of PhilFoodEx; and Mr. Sergio Ortiz Luiz, President of the Philippine Exporters Confederation, Inc. Their insights set a forward-thinking agenda for the expo, emphasizing the importance of innovation, sustainability, and collaboration in the food sector.

The three days featured culinary competitions such as the Philippine Regional Table Setting Competition, Kitchen Masters, PINASarap Breakfast, Modern Filipino Dessert, Healthy Pasta, Mystery Ingredient, and the UST Dream Team competition, featuring 2nd to 3rd year Culinary Entrepreneurship and Hospitality Leadership students from the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management. The PFE Knowledge Challenge also debuted during this year鈥檚 expo, challenging students鈥 knowledge on various topics.

Additionally, Dr. Reinald A. Andaya, CHE, a UST CTHM Academic Staff and the Laboratory Coordinator, held a seminar on the third day called 鈥淣amit Gid!: Iloilo City’s Journey for the UNESCO Creative City on Gastronomy.鈥

The culinary competitions were hosted by Mr. Louis San Sebastian and Ms. Clarisse Ricablanca, 3rd-year Culinary Entrepreneurship students from UST CTHM. On the other hand, the PFE Knowledge Challenge was hosted by Mr. Louis Anjello Cheng and Ms. Anna Mae Pa帽o, also from the same college.

The final day’s highlight was the awarding ceremony, a moment of recognition and appreciation for all participants who represented their schools with pride and passion.

The 16th Philippine Food Expo was organized by the Philippine Food Processors and Exporters Inc. (PHILFOODEX) and Cut Unlimited Inc. It is supported by 3HCE1’s Solasta Productions of the UST CTHM as partnered organizers and student marshalls.

The 探花精选 was hailed as the university with the most accredited programs in the country and in the National Capital Region by the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA), during its 50th anniversary celebration on December 1, 2023 (Friday).

Apart from the two distinctions, UST was also recognized for having the most number of Level IV accredited programs in the country. Level IV is the highest rating a program can get. Programs enjoying this status “have been highly respected as very high academic programs in the Philippines and with prestige and authority comparable to similar programs in excellent foreign universities,” according to PACUCOA.

Meanwhile, four bachelor’s programs were also recognized for producing topnotchers in recent Professional Regulation Commission licensure exams, namely, BS Medical Technology, BS Accountancy, BS Nutrition and Dietetics, and BS Architecture.

UST also won an award for the community outreach/extension program contest. The College of Science bagged Second Prize for “CCHEERS聽to Laudato si: Care for our Common 探花精选 through Environmental Expedition Integrating the role of Service-Learning.”

Thomasian professors were also recognized by PACUCOA. Graduate School academic staff Lucila O. Bance, PhD was named Outstanding Accreditor, while Dean Emeritus Carmen Kanapi, PhD received a Posthumous Award for Service. Service awards were also received by Graduate School academic staff Belen Tangco, PhD (Accrediting Team Chairman), as well as Faculty of Pharmacy officials Aleth Therese L. Dacanay, PhD, Frieda Z. Hapan, PhD, and Edilberto P. Manahan, PhD.

The University has reached the 3,000 mark in terms of scholarly works recorded in the world鈥檚 leading scholarly database Scopus as of October 19, 2023.

After registering 2,995 indexed entries last week, UST tallied on October 19, 2023 3,003 journal articles, book chapters, books, conference papers, and other research materials.

The eight most recent co-authored works, covering journal articles and conference papers, came from the following:

Citing Scopus鈥 labels for disciplines and research themes, UST鈥檚 ten leading research themes in terms of total indexed works are Medicine (1,284); the Social Sciences (473); the Agricultural and Biological Sciences (432); Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology (367); Environmental Sciences (260); Engineering (233); Computer Science (209); Arts and Humanities (180); Immunology and Microbiology (147); and Neuroscience (139).

UST finally got ranked in TIMES Higher Education鈥檚 World University Rankings (particularly the 2024 edition) after meeting the minimum requirement for Scopus-indexed materials in the last five years: 150 per year and at least 1,000 in the last five years. The 2024 World University Rankings covered the years 2018 to 2022.

The UST College of Tourism and Hospitality Management’s Hotel and Restaurant Management Society (HRMS), conducted the 鈥淲hiskey Live鈥 on October 18, 2023 (Wednesday), at the Beverage Studio of the Buenaventura Garcia Paredes O.P. Building.

Different individuals and professionals in the Philippine beverage industry were invited to share their expertise, such as Mr. Arnel Sulangsawa (Bartender, Coconut Grove, Admiral Hotel Manila), Ms. Camille Tiongco (Head Bartender, Bar Flora Quezon City), Mr. Rian Asidao (Diageo, Brand Ambassador, Johnny Walker, and Alumnus, UST CTHM), and members of the Whisky Live Team, Mr. Kris Ong (Singlemalt PH), Mr. Jaz Jan Juan (The Spirits Library), and Mr. Ramil Quinonez (Pinoytender Mgt.).

More than broadening the student鈥檚 knowledge about the world of whiskey from the sagacious talks delivered by our esteemed mentors, the selected BS Hospitality Management students who triumphed during the first phase of the event were also able to exemplify dynamism as they displayed astounding showmanship in crafting whiskey-based cocktails.

Ms. Mary Angel D. Elacion, Academic Staff from the Department of Hospitality Management, also spearheaded the event. The event also acknowledged the CTHM student participants for the Whiskey Live and Bar Show, which will happen on October 27 and 28, 2023 (Friday and Saturday) at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel. The student participants are Luke Adriano (BS Hospitality Management major in Culinary Entrepreneurship) and Louis Anjello Cheng (BS Hospitality Management major in Hospitality Leadership).
