The and its official student organization, the Communication Arts Students’ Association (CASA), of the hosted the 2020 edition of 鈥渄ecentralized Asian Transnational Challenges鈥 (d’CATCH) from February 3 to 7, 2020, along with its official organization.

At the opening ceremony held at the Thomas Aquinas Research Center (TARC) auditorium, Asst. Prof. Jose Arsenio J. Salandanan, Chair of the Department of Communication and Media Studies, admitted that mounting the annual event has its challenges, particularly this time when it is being held at the height of the Novel Coronavirus scare. Despite this, 鈥渨hat lightens the load is our shared vision and valor to make each year better than the one before.聽For this, I thank the faculty advisers and their students for making each gathering intellectually stimulating, culturally enriching and socially engaging,鈥 Salandanan enthused.

In his conference overview, faculty member and d’CATCH 2020 Coordinator Mr. Tito Quiling, Jr., briefed the delegates on what will transpire in the next four days.聽He emphasized the departure from the traditional omnibus structure in linking the documentary projects in what would look like a mini magazine program to a seamlessly integrated video. Quiling encouraged all participants to consult and update him on the progress of their video production.

Days 2, 3, and 4 were designated as workshop sessions.聽Day 2, the pre-production phase, provided the opportunity for each participating country to present the videos they have produced. Workshop participants and faculty members gave comments and suggestions on how best to integrate these videos to form one final video on the theme assigned to them. A brainstorming session followed to look for the common ground or threading elements for their composite videos.聽

Day 3 was the production phase where the different groups shot additional footages and/or situationers (sitners) to unify their videos, which must last for a maximum of 15 minutes including OBB and CBB, with English subtitles for interviews conducted using the native language.

Day 4 saw the post-production phase, where participants held a pre-screening of their final output. A designated member introduced the content of the video to solicit comments and suggestions from faculty members.

Day 5 saw a a twin-bill event: the screening of the final video output in the morning and the farewell dinner in the evening.聽To comply with the directives from the Office of the Secretary General vis-脿-vis the preventive measure in the light of the Corona-Virus scare, simultaneous screenings both in the TARC auditorium and room 201 of the Graduate school were held so as not to have 50 people in one venue. This was done with the help of the Communication Bureaus. Faculty members and students were given a chance not only to view and critique the re-mixed videos but commend well-executed video documentaries.

The event ended with Asst. Prof. Faye Abugan who delivered her closing message and thanked all the faculty members and workshop participants for making the 17th d鈥機ATCH yet another memorable event.聽Immediately after, Asst. Prof. Salandanan announced that the next host will be University Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Yogyakarta with the theme WOW! Prof Senja Yustitia accepted the hosting offer and ended her brief speech with the phrase, 鈥渟ee you in Indonesia in 2021.鈥

d鈥 CATCH is an annual academic gathering of Communication students from Asian countries namely, Thailand, Japan, Indonesia, China and the Philippines which advances practical international research and video co-production among university students.聽It started in 2003 as a collaborative project between Japan Kanda University of International Studies and the 探花精选.聽Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand and Communication University of China Nanjing joined the group in 2005 and 2009, respectively.聽 In 2013, yet, another country Indonesia University of Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Yogyakarta (UPN) became the latest addition to its roster of participating universities.

The 17th edition marks the fifth time the 探花精选 hosted the event.聽 UST was host to d鈥機ATCH in 2005, 2008, 2011 and 2016. Although two countries cannot make it to d鈥 CATCH 2020 in Manila, Philippines, Malaysia University of Malaya participated and hopes to be part of the consortium.

Assoc. Prof. Leonardo M. Canoy, Jr., PhD, Dean of the聽, emphasized the value that must be placed by entrepreneurs and employers on human capital, stressing that human resources are arguably the most important component in ensuring the success of the business.

Canoy, a human resource management expert who has been teaching for 34 years, was interviewed by RSU Wisdom TV, based in Bangkok, Thailand, on the show ASEAN Challenge. In the interview with Srikarn Nakavisut, Canoy expressed his belief in human capital and its place in a business鈥 success: 鈥淥f all the aspects of a business, I think the most important is still people鈥攚ho can make or unmake a business.鈥

鈥淯se things, love people, not love things and use people,鈥 the Commerce dean said, citing a famous dictum he teaches his students. 鈥淸As a boss] do not be too impersonal. You still need the soft skill on how to deal and interact with people.鈥

To inspire people to live up to their potential, Canoy said that employers 鈥渉ave to motivate [that] people鈥o look at them as humans and not just as one of the tools or as robots in the business.鈥 While profit and financial viability are important considerations, Canoy called on businessmen and entrepreneurs to ensure that 鈥渢heir focus is [not] more on money, machines, materials, and the market [to the point that they are already] neglecting the people who are actually behind the success or the failure of the business.鈥

The role of theories in business

An academic, Canoy affirmed the importance of learning theories and concepts in engaging in business, especially for those who undergo formal training through the acquisition of degrees.

Asked about how he teaches, Canoy said: 鈥淲hen I teach, I always start with the theories and principles then share the experience, as a teacher and a banker. In the college, there鈥檚 a mix of academicians and practitioners.鈥

As applied to real-life problems and cases, theories, according to Canoy, can serve as guidelines. 鈥淭heories were derived from general cases and also from the gurus or pioneers of management, to provide a guide. It does not mean you have to always go by the theory or the principle. There is no single theory that will guarantee success. It鈥檚 a case-to-case basis. You have to tailor it鈥攏ot use it 100%鈥攖o the needs of your company.鈥

One of its highlights is the Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) program of SLC which helped the students, under the guidance of their faculty members, to develop their clinical reasoning as well as their creativity in diagnosing and treating patients who cannot seek medical consultation due to financial and transportation issues. A referral system was developed so that students can transfer patients to other healthcare professionals when the problem of the patient was beyond the scope of physical therapy practice. The experience allowed the group of Thomasian physical therapy students to further understand their roles in the communities.

The interns also obtained additional insights through lectures and demonstration by SLC faculty members specializing in their respective fields like the Voltja practice in pediatric rehabilitation, Schroth techniques in scoliotic patients and lymphatic drainage technique in patient suffering with edema. In return, Mr. Cruz also shared his expertise in the field of cardiopulmonary physical therapy to the students of SLC.

Also, four UST students in their fifth year under the Physical Therapy program went on a month-long internship called the Global Internship Experience (GIE) that commenced on January 6, 2019 at the Mahidol University, Thailand.

The students, namely, Lia Carmella Silvestre, Gian Karlo Reyes, Diana Liezel Mosqueda, and Margaret Damatac, were accompanied by the College of Rehabilitation Sciences Internship Supervisor Ms. Fe Therese Chavez.

After the orientation and campus tour at the Salaya Campus of Mahidol University facilitated by faculty member Ms. Mind Pimpawee, the UST CRS students were given the opportunity to observe and learn the practice of physical therapy in various disciplines including Pulmonary Rehabilitation at Sriraj Hospital, Bangkok, Community Based Rehabilitation with Prof. Sasithorn and Prof. Thanwarat. They also learned to use the Biodex Isokinetic machine and Evaltech, as well as the Gait Analysis system, in a physical therapy clinic in Mahidol鈥檚 Pinklao Campus with Prof. Yoswasin and Prof. Komsak.

In the community, the group had the chance to observe a house designed with innovations done for the patient using current available materials in order to maximize its function. During the second week, the interns were divided into two teams and rotated to different fields and observed cases on orthopedic, neurologic and pediatric cases. The UST students also learned about hydrotherapy, fitness, and scoliosis.

CRS faculty member Chavez, was able to observe the different technologies that post-graduate students use for research. She was also able to observe the in-patient department and stroke unit at Sriraj Hospital.

The participants consider the Thai GIE as a wonderful experience being exposed to the practice of Physical Therapy in Thailand. They also observed that the set-up in the two countries were different, since they had direct access for Physical Therapy. They also realized that Filipinos should be more proactive in terms of their profession and be able to do much more for the Filipino community in improving the profession.
