Geronimo was awarded for his dissertation entitled 鈥淧agpiglas sa Bartolina: Naratibo, Espasyo, at Bayan sa Panitik ng mga Bilanggong Politikal na Manunulat鈥�, which explored the political phenomenon of prison literature and discourses that occur in a structural society that breeds political prisoners, who were authors themselves, in the history of the nation.

Likewise, Geronimo鈥檚 work attempted to deepen the interdisciplinary nature of knowledge, as well as scrutinizing local and global issues, through thorough research.

The Gawad Julian Cruz Balmaseda recognizes the best thesis and dissertation written in Filipino for the academe setting, most especially in the fields of natural sciences, social sciences, and mathematics. Through chances of publication and incentives, the award also aims to encourage the researchers to write their original works and to enrich the intellectualization and the modernization of Filipino language.

Geronimo, along with Mr. Roque Augustus L. Lamadrid, who also received the same award for his thesis, will be formally feted on January 26, 2022 at Bulwagang Romualdez – Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino.

Alluding to National Artist for Literature Amado V. Hernandez’s poem, Geronimo’s winning essay entitled 鈥�Isang Dipang Langit: Ang Wika ng Posibilidad sa Pambansang Pagpapalaya bilang Dalumat sa mga Akdang Piitan鈥� attempted to address the question 鈥�Paano nga ba winiwika ang posibilidad para sa tinatanaw na pambansang pagpapalaya?鈥� using the alternative discourse of imprisonment in the country, and through the lenses of its long narrative and the tradition of its imposition.

“Sa diwa ng ‘isang dipang langit’ bilang ikonikong dalumat ng paghihiraya sa posibilidad at hinaharap ng bayan, dadalumatin ang saysay ng wika sa alternatibong panitikan bilang panlipunang praktika at mapagpalayang gahum,” wrote Geronimo in its overture.

“Ang paggamit ng katutubong dalumat mula sa umiiral na tradisyong pampanitikan ng mga akdang piitan ay nagsisilbing praktika ng pakikibaka ng mga bilanggong politikal na manunulat sa kasaysayan. Mula sa ginawang pagsusuri sa kasaysayan, tradisyong bayan at wika ng paglikha ng posibilidad sa mga akdang piitan, pagninilayan sa papel kung nalilinang ang proyekto ng dekolonisasyon sa kasulukuyang kaayusang neokolonyal tungo sa paglikha ng tinatanaw na pambansang pagpapalaya,” Geronimo continued.

In conjunction with the celebration of Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa, the theme of the event was “Filipino at mga Wikang Katutubo sa Dekolonisasyon ng Pag-iisip ng mga Pilipino”.
