The ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ was hailed as the university with the most accredited programs in the country and in the National Capital Region by the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA), during its 50th anniversary celebration on December 1, 2023 (Friday).

Apart from the two distinctions, UST was also recognized for having the most number of Level IV accredited programs in the country. Level IV is the highest rating a program can get. Programs enjoying this status “have been highly respected as very high academic programs in the Philippines and with prestige and authority comparable to similar programs in excellent foreign universities,” according to PACUCOA.

Meanwhile, four bachelor’s programs were also recognized for producing topnotchers in recent Professional Regulation Commission licensure exams, namely, BS Medical Technology, BS Accountancy, BS Nutrition and Dietetics, and BS Architecture.

UST also won an award for the community outreach/extension program contest. The College of Science bagged Second Prize for “CCHEERS to Laudato si: Care for our Common ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ through Environmental Expedition Integrating the role of Service-Learning.”

Thomasian professors were also recognized by PACUCOA. Graduate School academic staff Lucila O. Bance, PhD was named Outstanding Accreditor, while Dean Emeritus Carmen Kanapi, PhD received a Posthumous Award for Service. Service awards were also received by Graduate School academic staff Belen Tangco, PhD (Accrediting Team Chairman), as well as Faculty of Pharmacy officials Aleth Therese L. Dacanay, PhD, Frieda Z. Hapan, PhD, and Edilberto P. Manahan, PhD.

Three faculty members of the Department of Medical Technology of the Faculty of Pharmacy were elected to the Philippine Association of Schools of Medical Technology and Public Health (PASMETH) national executive board. The election was announced during PASMETH’s 52nd & 53rd convention held from July 4 to 6, 2023.

Department of Medical Technology Chair Prof. Edilberto P. Manahan, PhD was named as the association’s Secretary, while faculty members Assoc. Prof. Gregorio L. Martin I, PhD and Inst. Oliver Shane R. Dumaoal, MSMT will serve as members of the Board of Directors. They will all hold office until 2026.

Accoding to Manahan, “with the three faculty members taking part of the Executive Board, the Faculty of Pharmacy – Department of Medical Technology will have access to professional development among the faculty members and improve linkages locally and abroad. Likewise, donning the Center of Excellence [distinction] in Medical Technology Education in the country, the University continues its role in implementing projects and activities that provide quality medical laboratory science education.”

The executive board is elected by the Deans and Program Heads of Schools of Medical Technology from all its 155 member schools. PASMETH’s primary mission is to harmonize relevant, updated, and globally accepted medical technology education in the country.

Research Center for Natural and Applied Sciences °ù±ð²õ±ð²¹°ù³¦³ó±ð°ùÌýAssoc. Prof. Maria Ruth B. Pineda-Cortel, PhD and Prof. Edilberto P. Manahan, PhD, faculty members of the Department of Medical Technology, were honored in the 2021 Philippine Association of Schools of Medical Technology and Public Health, Inc. (PASMETH) Educators Awards of Excellence. The virtual program was aired on September 30, 2021.


In recognition of her research expertise, Pineda-Cortel was feted with the 2021 PASMETH Educators Excellence Award in Research.

In her message, Pineda-Cortel shared her passion in teaching and in research. She also spoke about the importance of embracing new opportunities for a higher purpose. “Some of our dreams may not be achievable and yet, new opportunities will definitely come to our life—opportunities given by our Lord God to lead us to a better road where we can be of greater service,” she said.

She specializes in gestational diabetes mellitus, specifically the analysis of gene expressions from patients who have contracted it. Her research interests also include dengue and malaria, as well as climate change. 

Pineda-Cortel serves as the Laboratory Coordinator of the Department of Medical Technology and teaches at the Graduate School.

Meanwhile, Manahan received the 2021 PASMETH Educators Excellence Award in the field of Academic Leadership for steering the BS-Medical Technology program to academic excellence, despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

“[The Covid-19 pandemic] has been a learning opportunity. We learn new ways of delivering lessons and even found way to conduct our students internship. This is where administrators must learn to bring everyone on board,” Manahan said in his message.

“We must acknowledge that no suggestion is ever irrelevant as we experience new things at different levels. Remember, teamwork will always work. Receiving this PASMETH Educators Award of Excellence for Academic Leadership is timely. [It is] a reminder that the work we do now has a lasting impact,” he added.

Under his leadership, the BS-Medical Technology program has showcased excellent performances in the annual Licensure Exams. Moreover, the program has received coveted recognitions such as the Level 4 of Accreditation, the highest rank given by the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA), and the Center of Excellence (COE) grant from the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd). It likewise received the coveted ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance Group certification.

Dean , together with academic officials, namely, Faculty Secretary Asst. Prof. Renz Kenneth G. Cadiang, International Relations Officer , Chair Assoc. Prof. Edilberto Manahan, Ph.D., and Advance Pharmacy Practice Experience Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Nelson Tubon, Ph.D., visited the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutics of the Monash University in Australia on July 29, 2019. 

The UST Pharmacy officials were welcomed by the administrative and academic officials of Monash University, namely, Project Pharmacist Director Prof. John Jackson, Centre for Medicine Use and Safety Director Prof. Simon Bell, Prof. Tina Brock, Ph.D., Acting Dean Peter Scammells, Centre for Medicine Use and Safety Director Prof. Carl Kirkpatrick, and Centre for Medicine Prof. Kirsten Galbraith, Ph.D., Chair of Centre for Medicine Use and Safety.

Included in the discussion were matters such as the Pharmacy practice in Australia, research on medication use and safety, Pharmacy curriculum, faculty profile, experiential development and graduate education. There were also discussions on collaborative research and publications, co-supervision for research students, mobility programs, exchange students, and the use of Monash facilities for UST faculty members and students involved in research. After the round table discussion, the UST delegates were toured around the facilities and laboratories of the Monash Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutics.

At UNISA: Discussions and laboratory visits  

The UST group led by Dean Dacanay was at the University of South Australia (UNISA) from July 24 to 27, 2019 for discussions of possibilities of collaborative research and publications, co-supervision for research students, mobility programs, exchange students, global internship for UNISA students in the Philippines for immersion to Pharmacy and Medical Technology practice, and the use of UNISA facilities for UST faculty members and students involved in research. After the round table discussion, the UST delegates were toured around the facilities and laboratories of the UNISA School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences, such as Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology, among others.  

The group also visited the Royal Adelaide Hospital Pharmacy Department, and Medical Laboratory Department. They went on a UNISA Medical Sciences Lab tour with Prof. Brian Dale, Ph.D. The tour of the UNISA School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences Laboratory was facilitated by Department of Pharmacy Chair Prof. Matthew Sykes, Ph.D., while the tour of the State Herbarium of South Australia was made possible with the assistance of Mr. Martin O’Leary, botanist and curator.  The tour of the Adelaide Botanical Garden was facilitated by Dr. Susan Semple.  

As part of the activities during the visit to UNISA, faculty members from the UST Faculty of Pharmacy presented their papers at the UNISA-UST symposium held on July 27, 2019 at the School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences, UNISA West Campus. This was attended by UNISA faculty members and students in the Graduate School. Dean Aleth Therese L. Dacanay, Ph.D., presented ‘Pharmacy Practice Experience,’ Assoc. Prof. Agnes L. Castillo, Ph.D., discussed ‘Nano-engineered Delivery Systems for Antimicrobials,’ while Asst. Prof. Renz Kenneth Cadiang, presented an ‘Analysis of Medication Utilization among Filipino Elderly.’

students of the ̽»¨¾«Ñ¡ won the Championship in the 37th Philippine Association of Medical Technology (PAMET) – Philippine Association of Schools of Medical Technology (PASMETH) National Quiz Show, held at the Tanghalang Pasigueño last September 18, 2018.

Fourth-year Medical Technology interns brought home the crown from UST. They are Kharam Molbog, Patricia Madrigal, Kyle Magistrado, and Joven Morales.

Accompanying the students were Chair Edilberto P. Manahan, PhD, Head Coach Asst. Prof. Gregorio Martin I, and Internship Coordinator Asst. Prof. Ma. Gina Sadang.

UST last won the championship in 2016.
