The Philippine Physical Therapy Association, Inc. (PPTA) is the national professional organization of physical therapists in the Philippines. It is an accredited professional organization of the Philippine Regulation Commission. PPTA is also a member organization of the World Physiotherapy (formerly World Confederation for Physical Therapy) and the Asian Confederation for Physical Therapy.

The study recruited forty male recreational basketball players with (+) tight hamstrings and separated them into control and experimental groups. The study found that the M2T blade was 鈥渁 useful adjunct in physical therapy intervention in providing short-term improvement in hamstring flexibility鈥� and recommended further studies to establish the long-term effects of the blade.

Rimando is a faculty member of the Department of Physical Therapy of the College of Rehabilitation Sciences, while Hernandez pursued a Master of Science in Physical Therapy degree from the Graduate School.

The researches presented focused on various methodologies and concepts in Physical Therapy that were reviewed and tested on communities, particularly for the present situation. UST-led research proposals focused mainly on checking on various methodologies and their scientific soundness despite the situation whereas SLC-led researches explained a thoroughly investigated therapeutic method through a finished research experiment.

The presentations kicked off with a research proposal entitled “A Systematic Review on Online Well-being Interventions for the聽Physical and Mental Well-being of University Health-Allied Students”聽by Mikaela Azul, Mariah Edrianca Dalusong, John Edward Dela Cruz, Ma. Kelley Mangalili, Edric Ngo, Valerie Valerio, and Niels Viacrucis, who were led by Terence Buico. This was followed by another proposal entitled the “Effectiveness of Exergaming in Improving Well-being of Older Adults Living in Institutionalized Centers: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial Study” presented by Raj Bardonido, Janelle Catral, Stacey Evangelista, Arvin Labao, Kristine Ramos, Matthew Sabatin, and Keren Tuale led by Kian Marcelo. After both presentations, an open forum was provided for questions asked by participating CRS and SLC students and faculty.

These were followed by the research presentation by SLC entitled “Sustained Effect of Self-Static Pectoralis Minor Stretching on Muscle Length in Individuals with Pectoralis Minor Tightness,鈥� presented by Chanunchida Thaichaitum, Patthiya Jueboon, Ponchita Makradee. Another open forum was provided for questions and answers from both SLC and CRS participants.

The fourth presentation, entitled “Assessing Readiness towards Telerehabilitation 聽Among Older Adults with聽Hypertension In a Rural Community in Laguna, Philippines: a Cross-sectional Study,鈥� was led by Yalena Bergonio and fellow members Michelle Sy, Carlos Crespo, Hannah Lim, Lorenzo Mallari, Crissy Santos, Fernando Sto. Domingo, and Shermarie Zabarte. The presentations concluded with the proposal entitled “Experiences and Perceptions of Filipino Physical Therapists about聽Rehabilitation Practices and Services during the 鈥淣ew Normal鈥�: A聽Phenomenological Study,鈥� presented by Roselle Bautista, Alliah Davalos, Juan Dizon, Yvette Marquez, Josua Olaya, Ivianna Ronquillo, and Epifania Velez, who were led by Erico Nuguid.

These researches would not have been possible without the guidance of the research advisers, Donald Manlapaz, PhD, PTRP, Catherine Escuadra, MHPEd, PTRP,听Archelle Jane C. Callejo-Tiuseco, MPH, PTRP, PT, Christian Rey D. Rimando, MSPT, PTRP, Ken Erbvin R. Sosa, MOH, PTRP, PT, Jordan Barbra P. Nava, MSPT, PTRP and Christopher G. Cruz, MSPT, PTRP of UST. Meanwhile, SLC students were mentored by Varavee Temprom, MSc, PT and Kornkamon Cheawthamai, MSc, PT.

Prior to the event, participants were welcomed with an ad from “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” where various landmarks and Philippine cultural displays were shown. As UST hosted this first part of the series, students were given a quick virtual tour of the campus. This provided SLC students with a glance at the facilities and program offers of the university, as well as provided Thomasian students and advisers a quick trip down memory lane as they have yet to visit again the halls and walls of the campus.

The second part of the series, to be hosted by St. Louis College – Thailand, will be held before the end of April.

CRS has had sustained internationalization efforts for all its four degree programs鈥�,  (accredited by the World Federation of Occupational Therapy), , and . Student exchanges (both inbound and outbound) are complemented with faculty members receiving degrees and training abroad. The College likewise receives foreign guests from academic institutions for benchmarking and exploration of possible bilateral ties.

The first session took place on October 5, 2019 at Remedios T. Romualdez Memorial Foundation in Tacloban, Leyte. The officials who participated were Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs , DrPH, Dean Anne Marie C. Aseron, MSPT, and they were joined by faculty members Mr. Ivan Neil B. Gomez, PhD, OTRP, Ms. Zyra Mae V. Sicat, MOH, Ms. Catherine Escuadra, MHPEd, Asst. Prof. Christian Rey Rimando, MSPT, and Mr. Mark Angel B. Serra, MOH.

Two sessions were conducted simultaneously on October 13, 2019. The first session saw Dean Aseron, along with faculty members Escuadra, Rimando, and Serra, share CRS鈥� best practices on Internationalization to 14 faculty members of San Pedro College, Davao. Meanwhile, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Peralta, , and Sicat held the cascading session with Universidad de Sta. Isabel (USI) faculty members, who were led by USI Rehabilitation Sciences Department Chair Sue Romero, MSPT, also a Thomasian alumna.

The scientific program showcased the global perspectives and the best in physical therapy research, education and practice in over 170 sessions. Lipardo presented his paper titled, 鈥淓ffect of Physical and Cognitive Training on Falls and Fall-related Factors in Older Adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment鈥� in one of the platform presentation sessions.  His presentation was well received by delegates from different WCPT member countries. 

Escuadra was a speaker for an Indaba, a peer sharing and exchanges session in the congress, on managing a scientific journal. This was attended by journal editors and researchers. 

Rimando served as one of the congress volunteers assisting the organizing committee in the different simultaneous sessions. 

The three of them also served either as an abstract reviewer or poster and paper presentation judges. With the slogan 鈥淲here the world of physical therapy meets,鈥� WCPT Congress is considered the leading and largest global meeting of physical therapists across the globe. More than 4,300 delegates from all continents of the world gathered in this biennial event.

CRS Dean , was the Plenary Speaker, and delivered the topic 鈥淒eveloping the New Wave of Filipino Physical Therapists.鈥� She likewise served as resource speaker in plenary and parallel sessions, mainly as Chair of the CHED Technical Committee for Physical Therapy Education and Member of the CPD Council for Physical Therapy under the PRC.

As panel discussant, Dean Peralta talked about 鈥淯nderstanding the New Policies on Continuing Professional Development鈥� being a member of the CPD Council for Physical Therapy under the Professional Regulation Commission.

During the Parallel Session, Dean Peralta discussed the 鈥淧roposed Changes in the Philippine Curriculum for Physical Therapy鈥� which she presented as Chair of the CHED Technical Committee for Physical Therapy Education.

The members of the CRS PT Department likewise presented their research outputs, led by its Department Chair , who talked about 鈥淒iagnostic Value of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound in Acute and Chronic Lateral Epicondylalgia. Mr. Lemuel Lim discussed 鈥淟ived Experiences of Filipino Physical Therapists in Continuing Professional Development 鈥� a Focused Qualitative Study鈥�; while Mr. Lyle Patrick Tangcuangco expounded on the 鈥淎ssociation of Lateral Epicondylalgia and Shoulder Rotatory Motion: A Cross-Sectional Case Control Study鈥� and Mr. talked about 鈥淧referred Learning Strategies of Physical Therapists in using Stroke Clinical Guidelines in Patients with Gait Deviations: A Mixed Method Design.鈥�

Some served as members of the Organizing Committee including, Executive Assistant for Research and Innovation , and member of the Board of Directors of PPTA; College Secretary and PPTA Secretary; and Ms. Catherine Joy Escuadra. Internship Supervisor for PT Mr. Christian Rey Rimando, and Ms. Arlene Chua-Chiong Maya served as moderators.

Elections for Board of Officers and Board of Directors for 2017-2019 were held during the Convention and among those elected to positions were Mr. Christian Rey Rimando, Vice-President for Internal Affairs and Assoc. Prof. Michael Jorge Peralta, Member of the Board of Directors.

The NUHW students are assigned to clinical, sports, and community-based training facilities of CRS in order to observe local physical therapy practice and patient care. They are paired with local interns in order to guide them during the experience. Ms. Ma. Lanie Vergara, MA provided the students with an introductory Filipino course to learn basic conversational Filipino that will help in their interaction with patients. The students also had the opportunity to participate in academic classes and interact with students and teachers. The training program for NUHW students were organized by Assoc. Prof. Valentin Dones III, PhD (Chair of the Department of PT), Mr. Christian Rey Rimando, MSPT (PT Internship Supervisor), Assoc. Prof. Sally Jane Uy, MBAH (Coordinator for International Relations and Programs) and Ms. Jocel Regino, MSPT (Member, Committee on Internationalization).

On the other hand, the accompanying faculty members also shared their expertise with CRS faculty members. Prof. Kikumoto conducted a lecture on prevention of ACL injuries while Prof. Kubo conducted a workshop on Biomechanical Motion Analysis using the Vicon Motion Analysis System of CRS. These trainings are in preparation for potential research collaboration between UST, through the Center for Health Research and Movement Science (CHRMS) of CRS, and NUHW, Japan. This undertaking is led by CHRMS Research Supervisor, Prof. Consuelo G. Suarez, MD, PhD. Prof. Kubo will be returning to UST in September 2016 to conduct further trainings for faculty members who will be involved in the research project.

UST and NUHW has an existing Memorandum of Agreement for academic and research collaborations, effective since 2011 and is up for renewal this year 2016.
