On July 14, 2022, the research team of Asst. Prof. Alan Rodelle M. Salcedo, PhD, Ms. Nova Carisa F. Morabe, and Academician Professor Emeritus Fortunato B. Sevilla III, PhD received the Outstanding Scientific Paper Award from the National Academy of Science and Technology. They received the distinction for the paper 鈥淐olometric detection of Cadmium(II) using Glutathione-Capped Gold Nanoparticles.鈥

The team, who is part of the Sensors research interest group of the Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences, published the work in Acta Manilana, the official journal of the RCNAS. According to the abstract, the 鈥済lutathione-capped gold nanoparticles (GSH-AuNPs) were prepared by chemical reduction of HAuCl4 using glutathione (GSH) as the capping agent and NaBH4 as the reducing agent. GSH-AuNPs were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The pH value of the synthesized GSH-AuNPs solution was also measured to be 7.20. A colorimetric method for Cd2+ was developed based on the aggregation of GSH-AuNPs induced by its interaction with Cd2+, which is also exhibited as a red to blue color change.鈥

The detection method showed 鈥済ood analytical performance such as low cost, sensitivity, rapidity, and visual detection.鈥 The team concluded that 鈥渢he GSH-AuNPs-based method described here demonstrates potential application for the detection of Cd2+ in actual water sample for assessment and monitoring purpose.鈥

Responding to the global demand on higher education institutions to produce quality research outputs, the 探花精选 (UST), through the Office of the Secretary-General, has created the UST Journal Affairs Committee (UJAC). Through this initiative, an aggregate portal of all the University鈥檚 peer-reviewed and indexed research journals Is now available to the public. Titled 鈥淭he UST Journals Online Portal,鈥 it was officially launched by the Office of the Secretary-General and the UJAC on December 6, 2018, at the UST Paredes Building.

The UST Journal Affairs Committee is headed by the UST Secretary-General Rev. Fr. Jes煤s Miranda, Jr., O.P., Ph.D. It is composed of the respective chief editors of the academic journals published by the various units of the University.

Through this committee, UST aims to intensify its support for the maintenance of these journals by bringing them together in a single official online portal, providing editors with technical and financial
assistance, guiding editors in maintaining quality assurance and professionalizing the respective editorial boards, among others. Now that the various UST academic journals are under one common platform, it will be easier for researchers to access content and information about the journals, specifically the respective submission and publication policies of each publication.

Moreover, featuring various academic journals from different disciplines is an indication of the University鈥檚 commitment to knowledge production and dissemination, as well as the recognition of the academic efforts of the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and health sciences.

One of the goals of the UJAC is the eventual adoption of a University Open Access (OA) Policy, through which all academic journals identified with UST will be published in Open Access platforms, which means that all published articles will be made freely available to the public The 鈥淯ST Journals Online Portal鈥 can be accessed through http://journals.ust. edu.ph.

The journals included in the online portal are: Acta Manilana, published by the Research Center for the Natural Sciences and edited by Prof. Emeritus Fortunato Sevilla, Ph.D; Antoninus Journal, published by the UST Graduate School and edited by Prof. Rey Donne Papa, Ph.D.; Asian Journal of English Language Studies published by the Department of English and edited by Asst. Prof. Veronico Tarrayo, Ph.D.; Hasaan published by the Department of Filipino and edited by Prof. Imelda De Castro, Ph.D. and Assoc. Prof. Zendel Rosario Taruc, Ph.D.; Journal of Medicine 探花精选 published by the Faculty of Medicine and edited by Prof. Raymond Rosales, M.D., Ph.D.; Journal of Social Health published by the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education and edited by Asst. With the theme 鈥淕urong May Dignidad, Turong May Kalidad鈥 (A Teacher with Dignity, Teaching with Quality), the 18th Dangal ng UST (Honor of UST) Awards recognized the faculty members who excelled in their respective fields and earned honors inside and outside the country, as well as served the University for at least two decades, last May 11, 2017 at the Medicine Auditorium.

Rector Rev. Fr. Herminio V. Dagohoy, O.P. said in his message.

According to Fr. Dagohoy, the theme underscores the relationship between dignity and quality. 鈥

Dagohoy added.

Give Students a Chance

Honorary Speaker Prof. Gerardo Janairo, PhD, De La Salle University Chancellor and a Thomasian from the College of Science, recalled his days in UST as a BS Chemistry student who spent his college days with a bad start. Janairo turned this around, though, credited his Thomasian professors for giving him a lending hand in times of trouble and most especially in retaking the bar exams. 鈥淪ila ang mga tao na nagbigay ng inspirasyon sa akin at nagbigay ng pag-asa,鈥 he said.

As a professor, Janairo said he preferred to handle 鈥渞epeater sections鈥 and underscored his love for both his profession and his students. Being a product of second chances himself, Janairo justified that he will do what he can to bring the best of his students: 鈥Buong tiyaga ko silang tinuturuan, tinutulungan, at binibigyan ng pag-asa. 鈥

The annual recognition program conferred the following awards: Gawad Benavides (for length of service); Gawad San Alberto Magno (for outstanding research); Gawad Santo Domingo (for outstanding community development program); Gawad San Lorenzo Ruiz (for outstanding achievement, as recognized nationally or internationally); and the Hall of Fame Award (for receiving three awards in the Dangal ng UST, except the Gawad Benavides).
