Asst. Prof. Laurence Lloyd B. Parial, RN, MAN, a faculty member of the College of Nursing, was recognized as one of the best oral presenters (Public Health Nursing Category) in the 2021 East Asia Forum of Nursing Scholars, held on April 16, 2021. Parial presented the research paper 鈥淒eveloping a Framework for the Implementation of Job Rotation program in the Philippine Department of Health: A Qualitative Benchmarking Analysis,鈥 in behalf of his co-authors, Dr. Gian Carlo Torres, Prof. Alita R. Conde, Dr. Marica Estrada, and Mr. John Rey Masindo.

The qualitative analysis recognized the importance of job rotation, or the systematic movement of employees, as a mechanism employed 鈥渂y institutions to achieve different benefits.鈥 The study 鈥渄etermined the appropriate design of a DOH job rotation program in the national and regional offices鈥 after conducting key informant interviews and focus group discussions with human resource managers, immediate supervisors, peers of rotated employees, and rotated employees from 17 government and private healthcare and non-healthcare organizations in Metro Manila.

After utilizing Ryan and Bernard鈥檚 cutting and sorting technique, the study generated the 鈥淛ob Rotation Wheel,鈥 a 鈥渃onceptual model encapsulating the different elements in designing and implementing a job rotation program. This symbolic representation emphasizes the importance of job rotation culture, requisite provision, rotator role transition, and result evaluation in implementing job rotation.鈥

The study was funded by the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Health Research and Development. Parial is currently pursuing his Doctor of Philosophy in Hongkong Polytechnic University on a scholarship grant

In the wake of the COVID 19 pandemic, the 探花精选 embraced digitised education driven by the current public health situation and government restrictions to face-to-face learning. The College of Nursing has shown flexibility and innovation through collaboration with international HEIs, service industry partners, and stakeholders to enriched virtual mode of instruction that will contribute to Thomasian graduate attributes of being effective communicators and collaborators. The unified efforts of the administration, coordinators, faculty, and the active participation of students transformed remote online teaching as a vibrant hub for sharing knowledge, integrating best practices from international partners, promoting intercultural competence, and sustaining connections with its alumni all over the globe.

Since the start of academic year 2020, the UST organized a series of webinars for the Thomasian Nursing community. Foreign experts, nurse practitioners, and alumni from international partner HEIs and other healthcare organizations delivered lectures on a variety of health topics relevant to the current nursing courses. The webinars were offered to the Thomasian Nursing community at no cost and lasted for one to two hours.

鈥淚’m happy to have the opportunity to attend this webinar with nurse leaders from all over the globe. They are truly inspirational and really have helped me in my motivation to be a nurse leader,鈥 a third-year nursing student said after attending the webinar last September.

These international webinars and COIL were organized in response to the UST College of Nursing commitment to form competent, compassionate Thomasian nurses committed to the service of the church, the nation, and the global community.

Asst. Prof. Gian Carlo Torres PhD, RN of was invited to present his research study about Surgical Readiness at the Duke University Medical Center (DUMC), Durham, North Carolina, U.S.A on October 23, 2019. In his talk, attended by the Operating Room nurses and staff of DUMC, Torres emphasized the difference between preparing a patient for surgery and promoting surgical readiness when undergoing a surgical procedure. He further highlighted the role of nurses to address patient-specific concerns and address factors such as health literacy and anxiety to promote better surgical outcomes, which can be characterized by improved pain management and positive patient experience.

Torres is currently a visiting scholar of the Duke University School of Nursing (DUSON) and is being mentored by the Associate Dean for Global and Community Health Initiatives, Prof. Michael V. Relf PhD, RN, ACNS-BC, AACRN, ANEF, CNE, FAAN. Part of his visiting scholarship program is to advance the nursing science in his research area in perioperative nursing through research publication and employing advanced research methodologies, such as systematic reviews and development of health interventions.

Asst. Prof. Elizabeth D. Cortez, MAN, RN was also invited by Duke University School of Nursing for a week-long visit last September. Her visit was able to successfully achieve the following objectives:
1. Deepen opportunities for sustainable programming and partnerships between UST and DUSON
2. Explore possibilities for expanding collaborative activities and projects
3. Meet appropriate colleagues from the Duke Global Health Institute, School of Medicine, and the Physician Assistant Program to further interdisciplinary collaboration
4. Participate in roundtable discussions and other meetings on current and future opportunities
5. Build relationships with OGACHI team and key faculty members involved in DUSON鈥檚 global portfolio
6. Discuss and plan upcoming global clinical immersion experiences for April 2020
7. Attend the Duke University, DUHS, or DUSON global events of interest during the visit

Cortez is a strong advocate of cross-cultural learning and served as the chair of the UST College of Nursing International Relations and Programs from 2013 to 2019. Among the initiatives done were faculty and student mobility, as well as avenues for research collaboration, for the betterment of nursing education in the Philippines and globally. Cortez, known as 鈥淢a鈥檃m Beth鈥 by DUSON students, has played a critical role in the implementation of the Duke program for global clinical immersion experiences in the Philippines and the USA since 2016.
