Last November 19, 2018 (Monday), BS Interior Design student Odrysa Mie Serino was declared as the Gold Winner, Interior Design Category, in the Nippon Paint Asia Young Designer Awards (AYDA), for her work entitled 鈥淕unita,鈥� a greenhouse cemetery.
According to the explanation, Gunita will be a 鈥淸nurturing] environment for the nature through the dead,鈥� for the bodies will be used as fertilizers for the trees. The concept aims at ensuring that the families who visit will take care of the tree while seeking comfort beneath its shade. According to Serino, 鈥渋t is a concept of person which will always be a part of the Earth and in this sense, [the person will never be] really gone.鈥�
The entire complex contains a Chapel, the Garden of Eden, a rooftop garden, a reception lobby, a standard room, as well as a food court. Serino鈥檚 design aims to use Lauan wood, bio-cencrete, PVC plastic, stainless steel, structural glass, and reinforced concrete.
Apart from a cash prize, Serino will likewise be given an internship opportunity at Santa Fe Interior Architecture and AIDEA Philippines, Inc., as well as a chance to learn overseas. Her victory likewise earns her the chance to represent the Philippines in the Regional AYDA competition.
During the same ceremony, Department of Interior Design faculty member Danielle T. Concepcion won the Best Professor Award, for mentoring Serino.
The 探花精选鈥檚 College of Fine Arts and Design was likewise recognized as Best Supportive University for the said competition.
